It is said that those that are not assembled, etc., do not arise from causes and conditions. You, the Madhyamikas, vow that all compounded phenomena such as the internal and external sense bases, and all uncompounded phenomena such as space, are without inherent existence. However, the reason for this, "because they arise from causes and conditions," applies to compounded phenomena such as the internal and external sense bases, but not to uncompounded phenomena such as space. Therefore, it does not pervade all similar instances, and the meaning of the reason is not established. That is what they say. In response to this, the commentator here says: That is not good either. The inherent nature of things, such as illusions, dreams, and mirages, although they are considered to be made by causes and conditions, are called inherent nature because others do not have them. For example, like the heat of fire itself. Therefore, the term "inherent nature" is a conventional term, not an ultimate one. It is said that it definitely shows that the meaning of the Madhyamika's reason, "because it arises from causes and conditions," is not contradictory, uncertain, or unestablished. It is shown in this way that the inherent nature of things, such as illusions, etc., arises from causes and conditions, and although it does not have inherent existence, nevertheless, conventionally, other things that arise from dissimilar causes and conditions do not have its inherent nature, but its own thing that arises from similar causes and conditions has its inherent nature, like an illusion. Therefore, it is called inherent nature. For example, fire arises from causes and conditions, and although it does not have inherent existence, other things of dissimilar kinds, such as water, do not have the inherent nature of fire, but fire itself has the inherent nature of fire. Therefore, it is called the inherent nature of fire. Therefore, the inherent nature of things that arise from causes and conditions is conventional, not ultimate. Therefore, our reason has no faults such as contradiction. Ultimately, how can inherent existence be something made? If it is not made, then there will be no absence of inherent existence.

The reason for understanding it this way is that if the opponent argues that inherent existence is only what is made. Why? Because it is like the object of cloth that did not previously exist but is later made. If, from the ultimate point of view, inherent existence exists, then how can it be said to be made by causes and conditions? Because the very act of making is without inherent existence, and without non-inherent existence, it would not arise. The author of the scriptures understands it this way, at what time is the refutation of these meanings inconsistent? If it is said to be inherent existence, then it is not made; if it is said to be made, then it is not inherent existence. At that time, who would think and hold that it is both inherent existence and made? Therefore, all objects that arise from causes and conditions are without inherent existence. Thus, because there is no inconsistent aspect, the meaning of the reason is neither contradictory nor uncertain. In this way, all objects that arise from causes and conditions are without inherent existence from the ultimate point of view, because there is no inconsistent aspect, so the Madhyamaka's reason, "arising from causes and conditions," does not mean "without inherent existence," so its meaning is neither contradictory nor uncertain. Nor is it not pervasive in all similar aspects. Even in conventional terms, unarisen phenomena such as space are not acknowledged to exist like rabbit horns. This is to explain the opponent's statement that because it does not pervade all similar aspects, the meaning of the reason is also not established, because uncompounded phenomena such as space do not arise from causes and conditions. The Madhyamaka's reason, "arising from causes and conditions," is also not non-pervasive in all similar aspects. How is it understood? The internal sources of arising arise from causes and conditions, and because they are without inherent existence, their similar aspects, the external sources of arising, etc., all objects that exist like illusory objects in conventional terms, arise from causes and conditions, and because they are without inherent existence, for them, the reason "arising from causes and conditions" is pervasive, so it is meaningful.
