Because the stated dharma has the reason of depending on otherness, and because the stated subject dharma is general, it is not that the meaning of the reason is not established, thus it is said. According to the tenets of the Vaisheshikas, even if those that possess the meaning of the word 'otherness' are said to be 'otherness,' such as things to be observed, etc., still, because the dharma that is said to be 'otherness,' such as things to be observed, etc., depends on the meaning of the word 'otherness,' and because it depends on the particular statement I make, the subject dharma also generally refers to cows, horses, Devadatta, sacrifices, things to be observed, observation, and the 'otherness' of the Vaisheshikas, etc. Therefore, those that depend are designated as 'other,' but those that do not depend are not permissible as 'otherness,' because there is no connection between them, so my reasoning is not without meaning. Furthermore, if it is considered 'otherness' because it possesses 'otherness,' etc., according to the tenets of the Vaisheshikas, if things to be observed, etc., are considered 'otherness' because they possess the meaning of the word 'otherness,' then the thing to be observed will also become 'otherness' without a second thing such as observation, etc., and will fall into the fault of 'otherness,' so it is not permissible, thus it is shown. To show the subsequent inference, even without a second, it will become 'otherness' from itself, because it is its nature, just as fire, without depending on coldness, etc., will become hotness by its own nature, thus it is said. Those are the subject, the dharma to be established, the dharma that establishes, and the example, to be connected in order. For example, just as fire becomes hotness by itself because it is the nature of hotness, so also, a thing without a second, because it possesses the meaning of the word 'otherness,' is considered 'otherness,' and because it is the nature of 'otherness,' it will fall into the fault of becoming 'otherness' from itself, so it is not permissible. Even if there is no second, if one imagines 'otherness' for a dharma that does not depend on other things, it is merely imagination, and depending on other things is the cause of the cognition of 'otherness.'

Because "otherness is the cause of that mind," if the Vaisheshikas, as they wish, regard the object to be observed, such as seeing, as non-dual, and regard the nature that does not depend on other objects as having the meaning of the word "otherness," even so, that is merely speculation and cannot be truly established as otherness. For, in the world, the cause of the arising of the mind of otherness is precisely dependence on other objects. For example, in relation to a pot, cloth is other, and so on, these are considered not to be the cause of the arising of the mind of otherness, and it is clear to the Vaisheshikas that they are not the cause of the arising of the mind of otherness. Because it has been promised that the meaning of the word "otherness" is the cause of the mind of otherness. Therefore, the Vaisheshikas regard the non-dual nature that does not depend on other objects as otherness, which contradicts the common understanding of the world, and therefore it is merely speculation. If one thinks that something other and not other has otherness, it will become meaningless and inconsistent with negation. "Because the otherness that the Vaisheshikas consider to have the meaning of the word 'otherness' will also become otherness," this is also, if one thinks that something that is already otherness has the meaning of the word "otherness," or if one thinks that something that is not other has the meaning of the word "otherness," then the former case will become meaningless, because it is meaningless to think that something that is already otherness has otherness. The latter case will become inconsistent with negation, because it is inconsistent to think that something that was not otherness before later has otherness. If one thinks that something that cannot be expressed later has otherness, etc., because the Vaisheshikas, as they wish, regard the object to be observed, etc., which was neither oneness nor otherness before, and which cannot be expressed, later think that it has the meaning of the word "otherness," and therefore think that it is otherness, but the thing does not therefore have the meaning of the word "otherness," so this is also unreasonable.
