We assert the selflessness of self and what belongs to self. If you, Madhyamikas, establish the absence of self and what belongs to self by claiming that selflessness is the absence of self that is completely imputed by non-Buddhists, then you commit the fault of establishing what is already established. This is because it is already established in our position that it does not exist. If you want to establish emptiness of inherent existence, then it is like the body of a woman conjured by a magician. Emptiness of inherent existence means that there is no characteristic of a real entity, so the reason exists only in the dissimilar side, so it is contradictory in meaning. If you Madhyamikas use the absence of inherent existence to establish that the Mahayana practitioners have vowed that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, then your example is like the body of a woman conjured by a magician. Regarding this, what you want to establish, the Dharma, which is emptiness of inherent existence, is the characteristic of non-existence, because like the body of a woman conjured by a magician, although there is no real woman, the real objects of magical instruments such as grass and trees are not non-existent. Therefore, your reason for establishing that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence is a deceptive Dharma, because it exists only in our dissimilar side, so your establishment of all phenomena as emptiness is contradictory in meaning, so it is not established. They will say that. In order to answer what they said, the commentator explains here: You fabricate non-inherent existence as non-inherent existence like a rabbit's horn, and become universally frightened, just like children at night fabricate their own shadows as ghosts and make fearful cries. You other schools, because I have explained the selflessness of Dharma, therefore you think that it is completely non-existent like a rabbit's horn, and are frightened by emptiness, so you are confused and argue like that example. Regarding this, if non-inherent existence is completely imputed by non-Buddhists,

If I prove "I am without self" (ātmanā anātmā), then it is proving what is already established. What need is there to summarize with words such as these? If I prove "emptiness of inherent existence" (svabhāva-śūnyatā), then it is like the body of a woman conjured by a magician. Because "emptiness of inherent existence" is without the characteristic of non-entity, therefore the reason exists only on the side of disagreement, and thus it is self-contradictory. Although you have stated these two difficulties to me, nevertheless, these do not harm my position; listen to the reasoning. If you say that the self (ātman) completely conceived by the non-Buddhists is neither other than the aggregates (skandha) and so forth, nor is it itself, therefore, saying that the aggregates and so forth are without a self, that is, "no-self" (anātman), is false, which is what you are trying to show. If that is the case, then the Madhyamika should acknowledge it. How should it be acknowledged? Therefore, if it is for the sake of showing that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence, because it is a deceptive dharma, I establish this reason. Even the no-self of a person (pudgala-anātman) depends on this reason; if this reason does not exist, the no-self of a person will not arise. Therefore, even if this reason can prove the no-self of a person, there will be no fault of proving what is already established. For example, in order to show impermanence, establishing the reason of "being made" (kṛtakatva), even suffering (duḥkha) and so forth depend on this reason; if this reason does not exist, suffering and so forth will not arise. Therefore, this reason can prove suffering and so forth, and there will be no fault of proving what is already established. Similarly, because it is a deceptive dharma, this reason can also prove the no-self of phenomena (dharma-anātman), that is, emptiness of inherent existence; what harm is there to us? For the time being, answer those previous opponents in this way. If the opponent says, if those without inherent existence prove "I am without self," then it is proving what is already established. I have already answered their statement. Because the deceptive dharma also depends on emptiness of inherent existence, if emptiness of inherent existence does not exist, the deceptive dharma will not arise. Therefore, I say, "My example is like the body of a woman conjured by a magician," which is also empty of inherent existence.
