And, those which abandon afflictions, such as meditative absorption, which have objects of ultimate truth, are called deceptive dharmas because they are the cause of greatly deceiving those who have objects of ultimate truth, such as mindfulness. Among these, 'false' (Tibetan: brdzun pa) is said to be the word of teaching, and 'deceptive' (Tibetan: slu ba) is said to be the word of explanation, and the dharma to be proven and the dharma that proves should be applied in order. Who said this and where? The Blessed One said this, which is said to be from the Sutra Pitaka. The word 'these words' means the meaning of near indication. That is, the words spoken by the Blessed One in the Sutra Pitaka are to truly and closely represent this meaning. To show this, how did the Blessed One speak in the Sutra Pitaka? In the Hearer's Vehicle, it is also said: Whatever is compounded is a false, deceptive dharma. Monks, know that the non-deceptive dharma, Nirvana, is the supreme truth. That which is compounded is both a deceptive dharma and a dharma that is utterly destroyed. In the Great Vehicle, Subhuti, as much as there are compounded things, so much is false; as much as there are uncompounded things, so much is not false. They said that through the source of scripture recognized by both sects, it is shown that compounded things are false because they have deception, and uncompounded things are the supreme truth because they do not deceive. Therefore, because there are such scriptures recognized by both sects, it is said, 'All conditioned things are deceptive dharmas.' This shows that the nature of conditioned things is the nature of deception. The root of this verse is that whatever is conditioned is false, and the reason for proving this is that its nature is the nature of deception, and because it is the nature of deception, it is false. Therefore, 'they are false' is because they have no self-nature, which is the concluding word. That is, because it is a deceptive dharma, these conditioned things are false, because they have no self-nature. This shows the combination of near attainment and the conclusion.

Here, the words used are, in the true sense, the inner things are empty in nature, because they are deceptive things, like the body of a woman conjured by a magician. These are called the subject (dharma), the dharma to be proven, the dharma that proves, and the example, to be combined in order. For example, the body of a woman conjured by a magician is a deceptive thing, therefore it is empty in nature, likewise, the inner things are also deceptive things, therefore they are empty in nature. Here, some say: Like this, Buddhists assert the three-membered syllogism, therefore, the words of connection and conclusion are inappropriate. This is because Buddhists refute the connection and conclusion from the five members of inference—subject, reason, example, connection, and conclusion—and only acknowledge the remaining three members. Therefore, those who assert the five-membered syllogism think that it is intolerable for Buddhists to utter the words of connection and conclusion, that is what they say. In response to their saying so, here the commentator says: That is not good, because connection and conclusion are not considered to be separate from the other members, but it is not that they should not be used. We Buddhists do not consider connection and conclusion to be separate from the three members—subject, reason, and example—so we do not assert the five-membered syllogism, but nevertheless, it is not that connection and conclusion should not be used, so it is not inappropriate for us to use the words of connection and conclusion. If it is not so, that is, if connection and conclusion are not spoken, then in any argument, if the reason is not spoken, and there are only homogeneous and heterogeneous examples, then for these, the meaning of the asserted reason will not be clear, therefore connection and conclusion must be used for them. Therefore, in any argument, if there is only a homogeneous example, and connection and conclusion are not used, then the asserted...
