What power arose from the Madhyamika's response to the arguments refuting what was said? The meaning of "by the power of independent inference" is, what power arose from the Madhyamika himself stating the inference that establishes all phenomena as devoid of inherent existence? Thus, the author of the treatise, having vowed that all phenomena are devoid of inherent existence, then answered the refutations, and from establishing his own vow, what power arose that would realize Suchness, thereby, taking the meaning of the cause of entering into the previous vow as primary, he composes the thirteenth chapter. Connect it with what appears later in the text, taking the meaning as primary, taking the meaning of showing that all conditioned things are devoid of inherent existence from the aspect as primary, he said that he composes the thirteenth chapter. Therefore, the meaning of what appears later in the text of the thirteenth chapter that examines Suchness is that all conditioned things are shown to be devoid of inherent existence from a perspective other than the previously shown aspect, therefore it is showing the meaning of Suchness, therefore, taking that as primary, he spoke those words. What is the result of this chapter? By what means is that result obtained? Showing the meaning of Suchness by showing that all conditioned things are devoid of inherent existence from the aspect is the result of this chapter. By the means of answering refutations and the power of independent inference, that result can be obtained, therefore the commentator, in this context of connecting the chapter, also shows only the method and the first result arising from the method. In order to show the method itself by which that result is obtained, he said, "Whatever dharma deceives, that is false," etc., and to this he said, "To this." The teacher, taking the meaning of showing that all conditioned things are devoid of inherent existence from the aspect as the method of establishing that very meaning, "Whatever dharma deceives, that is false," the Bhagavan said thus, "All conditioned things are deceptive dharmas, therefore they are false," he spoke this verse, connecting it by saying that whatever is compounded and deceptive, that is false. The Bhagavan said thus, for what reason?

Because conditioned things are of the nature of deceiving, therefore, those conditioned things are false, they are without intrinsic nature. Previously, the author of the treatise vowed that all things are without intrinsic nature, but others retorted that conditioned things are truly substantially existent, because they do not deceive. In response to that refutation, here it says, "Whatever conditioned thing is deceptive, that is false." The Blessed One spoke thus, which is a response to the refutation. Why are conditioned things false? Because all conditioned things are of the nature of deceiving, therefore, those conditioned things are false. The inference that will be shown below is an independent inference. Thus, by responding to the refutation, and by the power that arises from independent inference, by those means, showing that conditioned things are without intrinsic nature from the aspect, understanding that very meaning, it shows that it is related to the fruit arising from skillful means and wisdom. Here, what is called "conditioned thing" is the subject. What is called "false" is the dharma to be proven. What is called "deceptive dharma" is the proving dharma. The body of a woman conjured by a magician, etc., are shown to be examples. For the purpose of temporarily showing the meaning of the word "false," it is said that "false" is because it is to be apprehended by mistaken knowledge, and because it deceives in the manner of children, etc. Because conditioned things are to be apprehended by mistaken, false knowledge, and not to be apprehended by correct, ultimate knowledge, therefore it is called false. Or, conditioned things are called false because they deceive children. How does it deceive? Because it is desired in the manner of self, etc. Because children fixate on self, purity, permanence, and happiness, therefore it deceives children, hence it is called false. "Deceptive" is because it is the cause of thoroughly deceiving mindfulness, etc., which have objects of ultimate truth. That is to say, conditioned things are mindfulness, knowledge, and meditation.
