Moreover, if the conditions such as seeds are destroyed and disappear, the sprout will also be destroyed and not arise. Therefore, it is not appropriate for the conditions to illuminate it. If something is illuminated by something, then it will not be destroyed by the destruction of that thing. For example, when the light of the sun, jewels, lamps, and medicine is destroyed, the boxes and pillars to be illuminated will not be destroyed. Saying this is because when the illuminating conditions such as the light of the sun are destroyed and disappear, the fruits to be illuminated, such as boxes and pillars, will not be destroyed. However, when the conditions such as seeds are destroyed and disappear, the fruits such as sprouts will be destroyed and disappear. Therefore, the fruit is not illuminated by the conditions. This is an obvious example. The statement that "illumination also arises from what was not previously produced, therefore it is said that the fruit did not exist before" is to refute the tenets of the Samkhya school, who say that the fruit exists potentially in the cause, and later it is illuminated by the conditions, therefore the fruit exists before. The nature of the manifestation of the fruit arises from what did not previously exist in the cause, but later arises by the power of conditions. Therefore, it is not like your view that the fruit exists before, but rather like the Buddhist view that the fruit arises from what was not previously produced, but later arises by the power of conditions. If you say that cause and effect are simultaneous, then that is also unreasonable. If the Samkhyas say that at the time when the fruit exists potentially in the cause, the conditions must illuminate it, then it is like the fruit existing before in the cause. This is also unreasonable, because cause and effect being simultaneous is unreasonable. What if they are simultaneous? Even so, ultimately, grain and sprouts arising simultaneously cannot be the objects of cause and effect, because they arise simultaneously, like the horns of a cow. Saying this is to explain the refutation of cause and effect arising simultaneously. Those are also, in order, the subject, the dharma to be established, the dharma that establishes, and the example, like the horns of a cow simultaneously.

Just as things that arise simultaneously cannot be cause and effect, so too, grain and sprouts, because they arise simultaneously, cannot be cause and effect. If cause and effect were to arise simultaneously, both would become devoid of cause, and the cause would arise completely from itself without depending on the effect, and the effect would also arise completely from itself without depending on the cause. That is also unreasonable. Similarly, characteristics such as birthmarks should not be prior to the basis of the characteristic, because there is no basis. For example, a drawing is not prior to a wall. This shows that the characteristic is not prior. These should also be applied in order to the subject, the proposition to be proven, the reason, and the example. For example, if a drawing were prior to a wall, it would not be prior to the wall because there is no basis. Similarly, if characteristics such as birthmarks were prior to the basis of the characteristic, they would not be prior to the basis of the characteristic because there is no basis. Similarly, the basis of the characteristic should not be prior to the characteristic, because it is the basis of characteristics such as birthmarks. For example, a great person himself should not be prior to the characteristics of a great person, and the earth itself should not be prior to a thin layer. This shows that the basis of the characteristic is not prior. These should also be applied in order to the subject, the proposition to be proven, the reason, and the example. For example, a great person himself and the earth itself are the basis of the characteristic, therefore they should not be prior to the characteristic. Similarly, the basis of the characteristic, a cow, also because it is the basis of the characteristic, should not be prior to characteristics such as birthmarks. Characteristics and the basis of characteristics that arise simultaneously should not be considered as characteristic and basis of characteristic, because they arise simultaneously. For example, like smell and taste arise simultaneously. This shows that it is unreasonable for characteristics and the basis of characteristics to exist simultaneously. These should also be applied in order to the subject, the proposition to be proven, the reason, and the example.
