Now, regarding some who say, "I see myself with myself," this is because the mind helps to establish the term "I," so it is by borrowing the term "I" that it is expressed. Whether in one's own or another's tenets, whenever it is said, "I see myself with myself," this is because the mind helps the name "I" and is in accordance with it, so it is by borrowing the term "I" that the meaning of mind is expressed, and in conventional terms it is said, "I see myself with myself," but in reality, it means that the mind observes the absence of self. Here, not observing one's own nature is because emphasis is placed on the meaning of the characteristic's term, because of reasons such as being a real thing, being knowable, and being expressible, like the ear and so on, or like sound and so on, or like my own nature, these reasons and examples of inference should also be explained in detail. The saying, "When observing one's own nature, it does not observe itself. When not observing itself, how does it observe other things?" is because the reason that the observer, I, does not observe form is that it does not observe its own nature, which is merely a symbol of the meaning of the characteristic's term. The reasons on that side also include being a real thing, being knowable, and being expressible, and the examples also include the ear, sound, and my own nature, and so on, therefore, these reasons and examples should also be used to explain the inference in detail. In order to show those detailed inferences, therefore, from the ultimate truth, I do not observe form because it is a real thing, like the ear and so on. Similarly, from the ultimate truth, I do not observe form because it is knowable, like sound and so on. Similarly, from the ultimate truth, I do not observe form because it is expressible, like my own nature and so on. These all explain that they are also the subject, the thing to be established, the establishing thing, and the example.

Having arranged them in order, those inferences show that the seer, the self, does not see form. Similarly, one should speak of form as appropriate, which shows that form is not the object of the seer, the self. Ultimately, form is not the object of the self, because it is a thing, like the ear and so on. Similarly, ultimately, form is not the object of the self, because it is knowable, like sound and so on. Similarly, ultimately, form is not the object of the self, because it is expressible, like the self-nature of the self. Having combined them in this way, those inferences show that form is not the object of the seer's self. If the opponent says that for the Madhyamika, because there are no terms in the ultimate sense, and because the self, which is not established in one's own system, is taken as the subject, therefore the subject is not established, and because it is expressible, therefore the basis of the reason is not established. And also, because the example, which is stated as being like the self-nature of the self, is not established, the Madhyamika's proposition, as well as the subject, the property of the subject, and the example, have the fault of not being established. In order to answer that aforementioned opponent's view that was brought forth from within, the explanation here itself does not have the fault of the proposition and so on, because it is based on the truth of conventional terms, and because the self that is commonly accepted is taken as the subject, and because its property is shown, and because it is established in the example itself. Thus, ultimately, the axe and so on are not established, therefore there is no example, therefore it is not establishing what is already established, this is the conclusion and the result of valid cognition, formerly when the opponent established the aforementioned opponent's view, for example, a cutter cuts wood, which is to be cut, with an axe, but the axe itself does not cut, therefore the eye does not see, that is not establishing what is already established. Thus, if analyzed with reason, ultimately the cutter, the self, and the tool of cutting, the axe, and the object to be cut, the wood, are not established, therefore you have no example, therefore I am not establishing what is already established.
