Those who are proud of their knowledge, and other deluded individuals, say that such statements are made to refute those who, though not truly knowing everything, are arrogant in claiming to be omniscient, and who hold erroneous views. They assert that the Blessed One is not omniscient, thereby advocating that samsara has a beginning. Therefore, they say, "The Blessed One is not omniscient because the beginning of samsara is invisible." This is tantamount to admitting one's own ignorance, just as an ordinary person might say they do not know where a deceased being has gone. They say this, and apply these words in order to correspond to the subject, the object to be proven, the means of proof, and the example, respectively. For example, foolish ordinary people might say, "I do not know where a deceased being has gone." This is tantamount to admitting one's own ignorance, and therefore they are not omniscient. Similarly, the Blessed One also says that the beginning of samsara is invisible, which is tantamount to admitting one's own ignorance, and therefore he is not omniscient. If he were omniscient, then he would also know the beginning of samsara, and thus it would be proven that samsara has a beginning. They say this. In response to this, the commentator here replies: This is not reasonable. For the statement "the beginning is invisible" is made to refute the speculation of others that samsara has a beginning. The meaning of this statement is that samsara is inherently without beginning, and therefore he knows that samsara is inherently without beginning, and the Blessed One has no obstruction to this. Therefore, such unexamined statements are motivated by the same cause as those who are jealous of the great wealth of others. They say this. The Blessed One's statement that "the beginning of samsara is invisible" is made to refute the speculation of others that samsara has a beginning. This is not to say that he does not know that samsara has a beginning, and therefore says that the beginning is invisible, but rather it is the meaning of the words that indicate that samsara is inherently without beginning.
