It is said that "if one eliminates the other, then neither is established." To answer this, the commentary here states that there is no fault because the desired is accomplished by blocking both. Thus, the Madhyamikas want to negate both of those sides. Now, in this way, if it is unreasonable for fire and firewood, etc., to be the same or different in many ways for the self and what is closely grasped, and for things like pots and cloths, then like an unskilled person who is not of a speculative nature, those arrogant ones who boast of being wise, is the self one with what is closely grasped, or is it different from what is closely grasped? Are things also one with the cause that negates them? Are they things, or are they different from that? Those who show oneness and otherness in this way are not considered by the teacher to be skilled in the meaning of the Sugata's teachings. Therefore, if we examine it in this way, oneness and otherness are not reasonable in the ultimate sense. Even if it is unreasonable, the Bhagavan, by the power of convention, teaches the beings to be tamed with discipline, and for the sake of perfectly accomplishing the accumulation of qualities such as samadhi and wisdom, he teaches with those things that are famous in the world. However, some think that these are the ultimate truth, and although the dharmas are without elaboration, they elaborate them, which the teacher thinks is unreasonable. Those who show the self and things as one with or different from that, do not think that those who show the meaning of the teachings are wise. Thus it is said, therefore, if we examine it in this way with fire and firewood, etc., then in the ultimate sense, the self and what is closely grasped, and things like pots and cloths, are not reasonable as one or different. Even if it is unreasonable in the ultimate sense, it is said that by the power of convention, for the sake of the necessary meaning, he teaches with the words that are famous in the world. Who teaches? The Bhagavan, the compassionate teacher. By what power does he teach? By the power of convention.

It is because of the way conventional truth is established. Why is it taught? It is to enable the beings to be tamed to truly accomplish the accumulation of qualities such as morality, samadhi, and wisdom. Because relying on higher morality can generate higher mind, and relying on higher mind can generate higher wisdom, and so on, all the accumulations of qualities included in the path of accumulation, the path of application, and the path of purification can be truly accomplished. What is taught? It is the terms "one" and "other" that are applied to things such as self and what is taken, pot and cloth. What words are used to teach? It is taught through the words that are popular in the world. After teaching in this way, some people think that these are the ultimate truth, and thus make such distinctions about the dharmas, thinking that in the ultimate truth, there are no elaborations such as "one" and "other," but they insist on elaborating, which is unreasonable. Therefore, the teacher Nagarjuna thought of this and spoke this verse. The summarized meaning of this verse is: those speakers who are not of a speculative nature, but are arrogant people who pretend to be knowledgeable when they are not, they say, "I am with what is taken, but not alone," thus showing that I and what is taken are one; and they say, "What is taken is different from 'I,'" thus showing that I and what is taken are other; also, fire and wood, cause and effect, parts and whole, qualities and qualified, characteristics and the basis of characteristics, etc., are the same. They say, "What wood is used to ignite the fire, that wood and the fire together are fire, but not alone," thus showing that fire and wood are one; and they say, "Wood and fire are different," thus showing that fire and wood are other; and they say, "What cause is used to produce the effect, that cause and the effect together are the effect, but not alone," thus showing that cause and effect are one; and they say, "The effect and the cause are different,"
