In response to what was said, the commentary explains: Here it says: If wood depends on fire, If fire depends on wood, Of the dependent fire and wood, Which one is established first? It is said that the first half shows the refutation of the opponent's argument, while the second half shows our side's view. To show this very point, what wood depends on fire to be established? Or what fire depends on to establish wood? Which of the fire and wood is established first? For them, there is no first established thing that depends on anything to be established, that is the intention. It is said. To conclude this very point and show the result of valid cognition (pramāṇa), in this way, since dependence is unreasonable in the ultimate truth, the meaning of the reason (hetu) is not established, and there is the fault of the example. If it is thought to be a conventional reason, then there is the fault of contradictory meaning and incomplete example of proof. It is said. If one thinks that there is no fault because the wood is established first, this is what the opponents say, these people say that this is collecting wood before everything in the world has arisen, so in this way, depending on the wood being established first, there will be fire later. Therefore, since there is dependence, the reason is established, so the example is also established. That's what they say. In response to what was said, the commentary explains: Therefore, it says: If wood depends on fire, It will become proving what is already established. It is said that if wood is established first and fire depends on it, then it will become proving what is already established. Why? Like this, if fire is established, it is reasonable to depend on wood, but if fire is not established and does not exist, how can it depend on wood? Therefore, even without wood, fire can depend on its own establishment, but you depend on wood to establish it, which will become a fault, so it is not right. To show this very point, for the established fire, because it is said with special words, it is because of depending on wood, that is the intention. It is said. If one thinks that fire exists depending on wood, then

If fire has not arisen before, it cannot depend on fuel. Therefore, if fire has already arisen, then the very nature of being able to depend on fuel becomes a fault of proof. Therefore, that statement refers to the fact that after the fire has arisen, it says, "This fire's fuel is this," "This fuel's burning is this." This is because it states a special difference, and because it depends on fuel, it is only to prove that particular difference that the fire has already arisen, but it cannot be used to prove that there was no fire before. Therefore, the author of the sutra thinks that this is not permissible. In this way, not only does that inference become the only fault, but in order to show other faults, it is said, "For the wood to be burned, it will also become without fire." If so, then the wood will also become without fire. Why? Because in this way, if the wood has arisen, then it is reasonable to depend on fire, but if the wood has not arisen and does not exist, then how can it depend on fire? Therefore, the wood itself will also become the fault of being completely established by itself without fire. In order to show that very thing, it is said, "Because that wood was previously established as wood even without depending on fire," the author of the sutra thinks. It is said, "At the time of not burning, it is also admitted that it is wood even without depending on fire." "That is not desired" means that previously being established as wood without depending on fire, that is also not desired by you. Because this is a word with loopholes, the inference is obvious, that is to say, "For the wood to be burned, it will also become without fire," because this is a word with loopholes of the fault that the wood previously becomes established as wood even without depending on fire, therefore, reversing from that, through the meaning of the occasion, the inference is obvious. Therefore, ultimately, wood does not exist before fire, because it is with dependence, like the very nature of fire itself, it is said. Those are the subject, the dharma to be established, the dharma of proof, and the example, corresponding in order. For example, the very nature of fire itself, because it is with dependence on fuel, therefore it does not exist before fuel, similarly wood also depends on fire.
