Now, if it is the nature of seeing, it will become seeing. If so, what is the fault? If so, there will be the fault of reason and example, thus it is said. If so, previously the eye alone has the function of seeing, because it is so stated in the treatise on sound. Therefore, the fault of reason and example previously established, in reality, in the treatise on sound, the sound of seeing and the sound of Buddha cannot be declared, because there is no example, as it is said, because there is this fault, it is not permissible. If it is said that because it is the agent of the act of seeing, therefore it is seeing itself, then, if the opponent says that apart from the root consciousness of the eye, there is no other act of seeing, therefore, the eye is the agent of the act of seeing, so it is not sleep, it is seeing itself. To that saying, as a response to that saying, if at that time it is seeing, then the act of seeing itself is meaningless, and so on. At that time, if the eye is seeing, then for it, the arising of a second act of seeing itself is meaningless. Therefore, to see with seeing, how can that be reasonable? It is unreasonable, because it possesses the act of seeing. The meaning of this statement is that if the eye is the nature of seeing, then, because it previously possesses the act of seeing, so for it, other acts of seeing itself are meaningless, because if it is the nature of seeing, then in the treatise on sound, the origin of action is spoken to the agent, thereby establishing it as the agent itself, so saying seeing is not permissible. If it is said to something that is not seeing, if you want to understand according to the later examination, it is also possible. Then what will happen? When one does not see even slightly, one is not performing seeing. At that time, if it is not the nature of seeing, then like donkeys and so on, because it is separated from the act of seeing, so something that is not seeing is also not something that is performing seeing. Thus it is said, for something that is not the nature of seeing, in the treatise on sound, the origin of action is spoken to the agent, thereby establishing it as the agent itself, so one performs seeing, therefore saying seeing is not permissible. Therefore, in this way, both situations do not possess the act of seeing.

Seeing is not the nature of seeing, and what is not seeing does not see the nature. This is the conclusion of the previous two investigations and the result of valid cognition. If there are two negations, then by understanding the meaning of the occasion, therefore, the act of seeing arises from the eye, and one sees? If one says this, it means if the opponents say, "You Madhyamikas say, 'What is not seeing does not see the nature.' If there are two negations in that verse, then by understanding the meaning of the occasion, the meaning that we want here is that seeing is the nature of seeing. Therefore, by what you said, 'What is not seeing does not see the nature,' the act of seeing arises from the eye, and seeing will contradict what you yourself have accepted?" If they say that. In response to that, it is said that it is not good, because just as the conditions of existence and non-existence are refuted, so too is the very nature of the agent of existence and non-existence refuted. That objection is not good, because earlier, in the context of the analysis of conditions, it was said, "For the meaning of non-existence or existence, a condition is not reasonable. If it is non-existent, what will it be a condition for? If it exists, what will a condition do?" Because it was said like that, just as the conditions of existence and non-existence are refuted, so too here, because the act of seeing, by both existence and non-existence, refutes the very nature of the agent of seeing, what is not seeing does not act as the nature of seeing. Thus, by showing the way of negating without acting, it is said that seeing acts as the nature of seeing. Because the way of negating without acting is not accomplished, it does not contradict what one has accepted. By the reasoning of arising later, having closely examined the nature of seeing, if one thinks that it is seeing,
