It does not, because of the reason of burning, the reason of not burning, and apart from burning and not burning, burning cannot be known. Similarly, ultimately, the eye also does not see the form that has been seen, the form that has not been seen, and the act of seeing, because of the reason of having seen, the reason of not having seen, and apart from having seen and not having seen, seeing cannot be known. Like this, the words should be expressed in order. If so, if fire does not burn and seeing does not see, then what can be an example of what? Therefore, the example of fire is not effective for proving seeing. To this, others say that the opponent, like fire, seeing and so on can be established. For example, fire burns, but it only burns other things, not itself. Similarly, seeing also sees, but it only sees other things, not itself. As an answer to this statement: For the sake of proving seeing, the example of fire is not effective. By contemplating the gone and not gone, this is the answer with observation. That is, because it does not burn other things. This is the explanation of the third verse, explained by the one abiding in stillness, Buddha Palita, in this way. Previously it was said: Seeing one's own nature, that is not seeing oneself. When one does not see oneself, how does one see other things? To this statement, the opponents, those who assert the nature of seeing, think that like fire, seeing and so on can be established. For example, fire burns, but it only burns other things, not itself. Similarly, seeing also sees, but it only sees other things, not itself. In order to eliminate the fault of the reason being uncertain by using the example of fire, the one abiding in stillness, Buddha Palita, spoke this third verse, that seeing also does not see other things, and fire also does not burn other things, therefore there is no fault of the reason being uncertain.

It is called "is." Others say that it is unreasonable because merely using examples, the former view is very meaningless, so refuting it is unreasonable. This is called the words of the commentator himself refuting that the explanation of the Sthavira Buddhapālita is unreasonable. Why is that unreasonable? Because the opponent, with the nature of viewing, is like fire, viewing and so on can be established. For example, fire is burning, but what is burning is other things, not burning its own nature. Similarly, viewing is also viewing, but what is viewing is other things, not viewing its own nature. Therefore, the aforementioned view does not have the combination of the characteristics of reasoning, because it is merely giving an example, which is very meaningless, so it is only criticized for having incomplete limbs. The Sthavira Buddhapālita said this: You, in order to strongly prove viewing, the example of fire that you gave cannot strongly prove viewing. Why? Because here it is said to burn firewood, but there is no fire apart from the firewood. Therefore, fire is burning its own nature, not burning other things. If it is thought that even if it is not other things, firewood is what is burned, and fire is the burner, then I can only say that firewood is the burner, and fire is what is burned. Or it is necessary to explain a special argument. Master Āryadeva also said: Fire burns heat itself, how can non-heat burn? Therefore, there is no firewood, and without it, there is no fire. In this way, the example of fire cannot be established, so the former view's refutation is unreasonable. What others say, and so on, are those who are attached to viewing, because their own intellect cannot establish viewing, so here they follow the mark of the grammarians to prove that the eye has the function of viewing. The eye only has the function of viewing, because it is so in the treatises of statements.

The so-called "for the sake of the doctrine" and so on should be applied in order to correspond to the subject, the object to be proven, and the means of proof, respectively. Here, because in the treatise on sound, the cause of action is stated for the agent and then observed, it is called observation. What is stated there, "Whatever is stated as such, is just so," is a combination of close association. Here, in the grammar treatise, for any agent, the cause of the action verb, such as 'given by the gods, therefore the agent,' and the statement 'the eye sees form, therefore the seer.' Therefore, because the eye sees form, it is called seeing. Whatever the treatise on sound states is just so, it does not change into something else, therefore, the seer, the eye, has the act of seeing. For example, stating the cause of action for the agent, such as 'because he has understood or has come to understand, he is called Buddha,' is a similar example. For example, in the Buddha's treatises, for any agent, with the action verb or cause, such as 'the Buddha, the Bhagavan, has understood all knowable things, or has come to understand, therefore he is called Buddha.' Therefore, the Buddha is like a lotus that opens itself, the lotus has the act of opening, similarly, he himself understands all knowable things, therefore the Buddha, the Bhagavan, has the act of understanding knowable things, similarly, the eye also sees form, therefore the eye also has the act of seeing. To that which is said in this way, the commentator himself answers that the establishment stated here exists in conventional truth, but does not exist in ultimate truth, and so on. Following in the footsteps of the grammarians, establishing that the eye has the act of seeing belongs to the category of conventional truth, but it is not ultimate truth, therefore it does not exist in ultimate truth. How is it? Because here, seeing with the eye is prohibited, and its arising is also prohibited, therefore it is devoid of seeing. When one does not see even a little, then one is not a seer. When is it eternal or momentary or
