Having spoken, the scriptures say that taking up views and so on is merely the aggregation of the great elements and so on, so they are not substantially existent. Therefore, the self that takes them up is also not previously existent. Previously it was said, "Where would there be what is not? Where would there be what is absent?" This has already answered that question. If the opponent says, "It is just as you think," then the opponent will say, "Even if the self that takes up views and so on does not previously exist, the views and so on that are taken up are substantially existent." In order to answer what they have said, an explanation is given here, therefore it is said, "If whose is not, those also are not." This means that if views and so on are not the taker, nor are they substantially existent, then it is difficult to answer the fault that the reason of the taker itself is not established and so on. It means that if views and so on are whose self, if that self does not exist, then views and so on also do not exist, therefore the fault of the reason of the taker's previously existing self not being established and contradicting it has not been eliminated. Therefore, if we examine with the proof shown above, then for "Whatever of views and so on, before, now, and after is not, is it existent or non-existent, all discriminations change." The taker, who is before, now, and after views and so on, has not been established as substantially existent, and is non-existent like produced matter. For such a thing, is it ultimately one or different, existent or non-existent? Such discriminations will change. This is the conclusion of the debate. Previously, when examining the aggregates, "The cause of form is not apart, form does not appear, except for the name of form, the cause of form is also not seen." In this way, the great elements and the form produced from the great elements, one negates the other, and for things that are not substantially existent, the discriminations of existence and non-existence will change. Similarly, the taker and the taken, one negates the other, and for things that are not substantially existent, the discriminations of existence and non-existence will change.

will cease. In order to explain that in detail, the cessation of the thought that "there is something temporarily in that" is because it is not a substance. The cessation of the thought that "it does not exist" is because it is to be designated dependently. Or, the cessation of the thought that "it exists" is because there is no inference that proves that it exists in the ultimate sense. The cessation of the thought that "it does not exist" is because the conceptualization of non-existence that arises by eliminating existence, and because that does not exist, the conceptualization of non-existence also does not exist. Thus it is said. In order to indicate that source, the Blessed One said in the Sutra of the Holy Lankavatara: "If analyzed by wisdom, self-nature cannot be grasped. Therefore, they say that those are inexpressible and without self-nature." It is like what was said. Thus it is said. To this, the inference of those who say that there is a taker is that the taker exists, and also, because he is the taker, he is called the taker, and because he is taken, he is called the taken, and because these two are established, the reason previously stated is established, and whatever is said in this way is unreasonable, this is an added statement. To this, the meaning of the discussion here is that by stating the refutation of the reason for the existence of the taker, and by stating the independent inference, it is shown that the taker is without self-nature. This is the conclusion and the result of measurement, in the ninth chapter of the examination of the taker and the taken, the meaning of the discussion is regarded as the result of measurement. The opponent previously, in order to establish the existence of the taker, said that the taker exists before seeing and so on, because he is the taker, etc. For those reasons, by stating the refutation, and the author of the treatise himself

In order to eliminate the statement "it has been established," here too, it should be established by the source of credible scriptural authority. Therefore, in the sutra requested by the Bhagavati Mother Prajñāpāramitā, who completely subdues with extreme diligence, it says: With extreme diligence completely subduing, there is no knower or causer of knowing in form. In feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, there is no knower or causer of knowing. What is it that there is no knower or causer of knowing in form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness? That is Prajñāpāramitā. There is no knower or seer in form. In feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, there is no knower or seer. What is it that there is no knower or seer in form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness? That is Prajñāpāramitā. Thus, it is said that those are established. In this way, the establishment of those credible scriptures is the merit of showing that the grasper is empty of inherent existence. Therefore, I do not show that the grasper is empty of inherent existence merely by dry reasoning from my own thought, but like this, there are also those scriptures. Because in the vast Mahāyāna sutras, those that show the grasper to be empty of inherent existence, showing them in this treatise as the object to be explained in detail, is the wisdom of the teacher. In the commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, the Lamp of Wisdom, composed by the teacher Bhāviveka, the examination of the grasper and the grasped, called the ninth chapter, the extensive explanation composed by the teacher Avalokitaśāntarakṣita is completed. That is, by refuting the distinctions of the contradictory aspects of the emptiness of inherent existence of the grasper and the grasped, thereby showing the distinction that dependent arising is neither the same meaning nor different meanings, due to the power of meaning, the tenth chapter, called "Power," will be composed. The word "power" is also used here for commitment.
