Similarly, it is not established as one because of the different objects, such as the view that there is a self different from the aggregates. There is no self different from the aggregates. Therefore, it is also unreasonable to think of seeing and so on as other takers, because the basis is not established. Others who claim that there is a taker say this: The Blessed One said that the six sense bases arise from the cause of name and form, and the form is the four great elements, so the six sense bases arise from the cause of the four great elements. Those elements are also taken by the taker, so the view and so on that have become the taker are connected with the six sense bases, and the feelings and so on arise in the order of previous existence, which is the way of the Tathagata. You say that the taker does not exist before the taking of seeing and so on, because it can be established, just as cloth does not exist before yarn, so this is contrary to the way of the Tathagata, so it harms the previous view, because it has been harmed, so that is not good. Therefore, those who claim that there is a taker, the existence of the taker before the seeing and so on, is not established. Here, the sutra says that the six sense bases arise from the cause of name and form, and the form is the four great elements, so the elements exist before the sense bases, and the statement that there is a self who takes the four great elements before the four great elements is the way of the Tathagata's scriptures. The inference you showed earlier, the establishment that the taker did not exist before, is contrary to the way of the scriptures, so it is not good. In order to answer what they said, the commentator says here: Seeing and hearing, and feelings, etc., also, that which changes from where, that source is also not existent. Because the taker himself as a substance is not established. Having said these, the seeing and so on, the sense bases arise from which causes.

Those great elements that are about to become, also do not have a prior existent taker. Because it is believed that the taker is real, but the taker itself is not established. Understand it this way. Then, if asked: How is it? This is a question, meaning: Then, the sutra says that the six sense bases arise from the condition of name and form, what is the reason for that? The answer is: It is only nominally established as name and form, and based on it, it is established as the taker. Because the stage of name and form, where the taker is believed to be real in the ultimate sense, is not accepted, there is no harm to the previous view. We Madhyamikas only nominally establish name and form in conventional terms, and acknowledge that based on name and form, it is established as its taker. But we do not acknowledge that the taker is real in the ultimate sense, and that the prior existent taker is the great elements of the stage of name and form. Therefore, we do not have the harm of contradicting the previous view. Therefore, it shows that because the belief that the taker is real is not established, it is not in the elements either. It also says: Seeing and hearing, etc., and feelings, etc., from what transformation do those arise, in those also there is not. This is the remaining part of the sentence "established as the taker of those." It means, if it is said that the great elements from which the sense bases such as seeing transform also do not have it, then what is it that is not in those? It should be connected by saying: In those elements, there is no prior existent self that is established as the taker of those. Therefore, it shows that before the elements, there is no self of those takers. If asked: If the elements are the takers of the taker, then how can they not be established as the takers of seeing, etc.? This is the other party saying: The sutra says that the six sense bases arise from the condition of name and form, therefore form is the four great elements, and those are the prior self of the taker.

Because it exists, someone might say, how can the upādāna-skandha's upādāna-hetu not be established as the upādāna-hetu of the sense-spheres such as the eye? In order to answer this, the commentator here says: The upādāna-hetu of the upādāna-skandha should not be the upādāna-hetu of the upādāna-skandhas such as the eye, because it is an upādāna-hetu other than the upādāna-skandha of a different continuum, just like through inference. It is said, "because through inference." Those are the dharma, the dharma to be proven, the dharma that proves, and the example, arranged in order. For example, the upādāna-hetu of the upādāna-skandha of offering is an upādāna-hetu other than the eye, etc., just as the upādāna-skandha of Devadatta should not be the upādāna-hetu, similarly, the upādāna-hetu of Devadatta's upādāna-skandha is also, because it is an upādāna-hetu other than the eye, etc., so the upādāna-skandha of the eye, etc., should not be the upādāna-hetu. Because at the time of the upādāna-skandha, the eye, etc., are not upādāna-skandha, and when the eye, etc., are upādāna-skandha, the upādāna-skandha is also not upādāna-skandha. This is not another meaning of the reason for the inference just shown, therefore, the upādāna-hetu of the upādāna-skandha cannot be established as the upādāna-hetu of the eye, etc. If someone says: When seeing and hearing, etc., and feeling, etc., are all upādāna-skandha, then it is said to be upādāna-hetu. In order to answer this, the opponent says: When the sense-spheres such as the eye, etc., are upādāna-skandha, their upādāna-nature is the upādāna-hetu. In order to answer this, the commentator here says: That is not good, because even when the eye, etc., are upādāna-skandha, the eye, etc., are only gathered together, so they are not substantially existent.
