"Ba" means to encompass all that has been said and not said. What has been said are seeing, hearing, and feeling. What has not been said are the faculties, mind, and the remaining mental factors. All of these are encompassed here. The word "also" means conviction, meaning that the faculties, mind, and the remaining mental factors that are encompassed here are also believed to be included in this. The word "mastered" means to include mastery, meaning that this half-verse is mastered to encompass all faculties, mind, and mental factors, and therefore is included in this. Therefore, this half-verse encompasses the six faculties, six consciousnesses, and many mental factors. This is the concluding statement. Therefore, seeing, etc., are the objects taken. Some say that before seeing, etc., there is a taker, meaning that the six faculties, six consciousnesses, and many mental factors are all objects taken, and the person who says "I exist before" is the taker. Therefore, the objects taken of seeing, etc., are taken by the person, and before the objects taken of seeing, etc., there exists the person who is the taker. Some say this. Some people, because not all of their own schools acknowledge this, are the schools of the Sthavira-putra. They say this, meaning that before the objects taken, there is a taker. Some say this, not all of their own schools, but the schools of the Sravaka Sthavira-putra say this. This is explaining the tenets of others, meaning that the taker exists before the objects taken. Saying this is the established tenet of the previous proponents, it is a tenet. The proof and inference will be explained below. They say this, for example,

If the taker exists, then those taken things can be known, because depending on it, they arise. This is called showing the connection of combination through the way of accordance, which shows the proving dharma. Otherwise, if a proposition is made: If things do not exist, how can views and so on arise? This is called showing the connection of combination through the way of negation, which shows the example of similar dharma. Therefore, 'Therefore, before them, the existing thing exists,' this is said to be the concluding words, which are the conclusion of establishing the proposition and the result of valid cognition. Therefore, what is the meaning of inferring with reason and manifest example as before? Just as before, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases truly exist, and there are reasons and examples for the proposition, similarly, here, for the proposition that the taker exists before the taken, the connection of combination is also shown through the way of accordance, that is, because it is the taker, this is the manifest reason, and the connection of combination is shown through the way of negation, for example, just as the materials for making a house, the carpenter, the paint, and so on exist before, through the manifest example, here the inference should be combined in this way. The taker exists beyond views and so on, because it is the taker. Here, whatever is the taker, it only exists before the taken things, for example, just as the materials for making a house, the carpenter, the paint, and so on exist before, these should be combined in order as the subject, the dharma to be proven, the proving dharma, the connection of combination, and the example of similar dharma. Here, whatever is the taker, it only exists before the taken things, for example, the materials for making a house, the carpenter is the taker, therefore the paint and other taken things exist before, similarly, the person who is the taker is also the taker, therefore views and other taken things only exist before.

Indeed, if this is Madhyamaka, then in order to eliminate the statement that you have taken the person as the position of the appropriator, because it is not established for us, any of your reasons will become the fault of being unestablished and the basis being unestablished. Or, it should be known that the appropriated things such as seeing and hearing have an appropriator who exists beforehand, because they are appropriated things, just like tree stumps and so on. In this way, another inference that takes appropriation as its position is shown. These should also be connected in order with the subject, the dharma to be proven, the proving dharma, and the example. For example, it should be known that tree stumps and so on are appropriated things, therefore they have an appropriator who exists beforehand, just like that, seeing and hearing and so on are also appropriated things, therefore it should be known that they have a person who exists as the appropriator. Therefore, the appropriated becomes known as the appropriator by the very act of being appropriated, and the appropriator also becomes known as the appropriated by the very act of appropriating, so both are established. These are the conclusions of the previous two inferences, and they are connected in order. Therefore, we say that the aggregates and so on truly exist, because the Bhagavan showed the appropriator and the appropriated by relying on them, so what was said is not lost, this is the fruit of valid cognition. Thus, it is established by the existence of the appropriator and the appropriated, therefore our previous promise at the beginning of the analysis of the agent and the action is not lost. This is the statement of the previous position. In order to answer that statement, the commentator says: Here it is said, seeing and hearing and so on, and feeling and so on, before them, what thing exists? By what is that designated? and so on. In order to show this, if seeing and so on and feeling and so on are missing, then relying on what do you designate this as the appropriator?
