In the Sutra Requested by the Mother Bhagavati Prajñāpāramitā, which Subdues Completely with Supreme Effort, it says: Subduing completely with supreme effort, form is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous. Feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are also neither virtuous nor non-virtuous. Whatever form is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous, and whatever feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are neither virtuous nor non-virtuous, that is Prajñāpāramitā, etc. All those statements are established, and this shows the source for establishing the lack of inherent existence of actions. The establishment of such credible scriptures is the merit of showing that agents and actions are without inherent existence. Therefore, I do not show that agents and actions are without inherent existence merely by empty reasoning from my own thoughts, but such scriptures also exist. Because, in that way, in the endless Mahāyāna sutras, whatever is said to be without inherent existence, such as agents and actions, is thoroughly established in this treatise, which is the kindness of the teacher. In the commentary on the Root Verses on the Middle Way, the Lamp of Wisdom, composed by the teacher Legdanje (Śrīgupta), the chapter called "Examination of the Agent and Action," which is the eighth chapter, is completed, extensively explained by the teacher Chenrezig (Avalokiteśvara). Now, by refuting the distinctions of the opposing side of emptiness, the ninth chapter is composed by the power of the meaning of showing that the taker and the taken are without inherent existence. The word "by the power" here is also to be regarded as the meaning of the cause of entering into the pledge and the meaning of connecting with what appears from the text below. The meaning of the words is the same as before. Regarding this, by the power of the meaning of the cause of entering into the pledge, it is now said, "By refuting the distinctions of the opposing side of emptiness." When the author of the treatise composed the first chapter of the Examination of Conditions, he made a pledge that all phenomena are without arising, so here too, just as the author of the treatise previously

Just like that, because it is said in that way in the sense of the cause of entering into that vow, emptiness is one's own tenet. Its incompatible tenet is the tenet of the refuter, for example, the aggregates, elements, and sense-fields are all said to be self-existent. The so-called difference of it is that after the opponent establishes the aggregates, elements, and sense-fields as existent, from below it says: Seeing and hearing, etc., feeling, etc., and also dominating, whatever belongs to those, some say that those exist before. If things do not exist, how can seeing, etc., occur? Therefore, those before, things exist, that exists. Etc., whatever establishes the existence of a person, the appropriator and the appropriated both say to be self-existent. The so-called refutation of it is connected to composing the ninth chapter in the sense of refuting it. In terms of the meaning of connecting the text that appears from below, it is said that the ninth chapter is composed in the sense of showing that both the appropriator and the appropriated are without self-nature. The meaning of this text of the ninth chapter that examines the appropriator and the appropriated that appears from below is that because both the appropriator and the appropriated are shown to be without self-nature, it is said in that way in its sense. What is the result of this chapter? In what way can that result be obtained? Showing that both the appropriator and the appropriated are without self-nature is its result, and that result can be obtained by refuting the difference of the incompatible tenet of emptiness, therefore, the commentator shows only the first of the means and the result arising from the means in this occasion of the connection of the chapter. In order to show that the difference of the incompatible tenet of emptiness is mentioned, in the immediately preceding chapter, similarly, the appropriator should be known. In that it says, becoming the appropriator and not becoming, becoming and not becoming, becoming the appropriated and not becoming

Because it is said that the agent and existence and non-existence are not taken close, therefore it is said here, "Thus it is said," and so on. One's own school establishes that in the ultimate sense, only the aggregates, elements, and sources exist, because the Bhagavan relied on these to explain the agent and the action. In order to refute this argument, after the analysis of the agent and action that has just passed, it is also necessary to understand the close taking. Thus it is said, through nine ways the close taker and the close taking are prevented, although they have been prevented, but because of their manifest attachment, among one's own schools, the school of the Sthavira Nikaya cannot bear it, so they say these again. Therefore, it is said, "Seeing and hearing, etc., and feeling, etc., and also the empowered, of whomsoever they belong, some say that they existed before." and so on. Among them, seeing, means "because one sees with this," this is explaining the agent. The agent, the self, exists before, because the eye, as the agent, sees with this, therefore the eye is seeing. Hearing, etc., is also the same, meaning that hearing, smelling, tasting, touching, and believing are also coordinated in the same way. "Etc.," refers to those that first explain seeing and hearing. Explaining, smelling, tasting, touching, and believing, those that first explain seeing and hearing, are "seeing and hearing, etc." Thus explaining, it summarizes the six senses. Feeling, means sensation, that is, feeling conditioned by contact. "Etc.," refers to consciousness, contact, attention, thought, etc., those that first explain feeling. Explaining, the collection of mind and mental factors, those that first explain feeling, are "feeling, etc." Thus explaining, it summarizes all mind and mental factors. "And" is the meaning of summarizing all.
