These are the words of the Vaibhashikas. If the Madhyamikas say, 'Both the rabbit's horn and the previously non-existent fruit are non-existent. What difference is there between the rabbit's horn, which becomes a cause and does not arise, and the previously non-existent fruit, which becomes a cause and arises?' In response, the Vaibhashikas say, 'The rabbit's horn does not arise because it has no cause, but the fruit is not like that. Because it has a cause, the non-existent fruit arises.' Although the two are similar in being previously non-existent, the rabbit's horn does not arise because it has no cause, but the fruit arises because it has a cause. Therefore, the previously non-existent fruit is produced by a cause. Alternatively, the non-existent fruit itself arises, and what is not a fruit does not arise. Therefore, it should be determined that whatever arises is non-existent. The Vaibhashikas believe that the previously non-existent fruit is produced by a cause, but what is not a fruit, like a rabbit's horn, which is completely non-existent, is not produced by a cause. Therefore, whatever fruit arises is previously non-existent, and its arising from a cause means that it becomes a cause, becomes not a fruit, and is produced. This should be determined.' Therefore, those who say, 'What is non-existent does not arise, because it is non-existent, like a rabbit's horn,' are proving what is already established. Now, although the fruit is previously non-existent, it arises. What is not a fruit, like a rabbit's horn, which is completely non-existent, does not arise. Therefore, the Madhyamikas say, 'What is non-existent does not arise, because it is non-existent, like a rabbit's horn.' This is proving what is already established, and it is not permissible. Because on our side, it is established that what is completely non-existent, like a rabbit's horn, does not arise. There is also no example. If it is the fruit itself, because it is non-existent, this reason does not follow the flower in the sky. If the Madhyamikas use the reason 'because it is non-existent' to prove that the fruit is a reason for the non-arising of what was previously non-existent in the cause, then the example taken from the flower in the sky is not permissible, because the flower in the sky is not a fruit, so it is not a reason.

Because it does not arise, therefore, for that result, due to the emptiness of the dharma of non-arising that precedes the result. Or, because it does not exist before arising. If one completely holds such a reason, there is no example, because that does not exist on a rabbit's horn. Or, the Madhyamikas believe that what does not exist will not arise, because it does not exist, like a rabbit's horn. If this is said to be without reason, then if one argues that "because it does not exist before the result arises," there is no example, because a rabbit's horn does not exist before arising, and it will not arise later. If one states something that is completely non-existent as a reason, then the meaning of the reason is not established. If the Madhyamika's reason "because it does not exist" is to prove "because it is completely non-existent," then the meaning of the reason is not established, because that which precedes the result on the cause is not completely non-existent like a rabbit's horn. It is clearly seen that the previously non-existent felt arises. Because there is no more excellent measure than what is seen, therefore, it is said that the result is previously non-existent. The Vaibhashikas say that now in the world, it is clearly seen that the previously non-existent felt arises later from the aggregation of causes and conditions. Because what is seen is the direct perception, therefore, the result is previously non-existent, and the cause produces the result, so the cause becomes the non-result, and the non-result becomes the action of the cause. In order to answer what they said, the commentators refuted the previous views, and in order to explain that the cause does not become the non-result, and the non-result does not become the action of the cause, they said "what is said here," etc. Among them, first, in order to explain that the meaning of the reason "because it is ungraspable" of what the previous Vaibhashikas said, "the unarisen result is non-existent, because it is ungraspable, like a flower in the sky," is not established, and that there is the fault of uncertainty, what is the meaning of "because it is ungraspable" that you consider to be the reason?
