It is not a valid reason. The assertion made by Buddhists and others who claim that the effect does not pre-exist in the cause is a reason for establishing the fault of excluding the distinction of the subject of the proposition. Why? Because, for any effect that does not pre-exist in any cause, such as the sharpness of a rabbit's horn, just as it does not exist, there is no action to be eliminated, nor is there a taking of the cause for its sake, nor do all effects arise from that cause, nor does it produce the capable by its power, nor does it have a cause. Similarly, the assertion made by you Buddhists and others who claim that the effect does not pre-exist in the cause, for the non-existent effect, there is no action to be eliminated, nor is there a taking of the cause for its sake, nor do all effects arise from that cause, nor does it produce the capable by its power, nor does it have a cause. In this way, your assertion has the fault of excluding the distinction of the subject of the proposition, that is, excluding the effect being produced by conditions, excluding the taking of the cause for its sake, excluding the effect arising from that cause, excluding it producing the capable by its power, and excluding it having a cause. Therefore, the assertion made by you who claim that the effect does not pre-exist in the cause is also unreasonable, they say. In response to their saying this, here the commentator says: That is not harmful, because we want to eliminate both extremes that are not well grasped. Your assertion that the effect does not pre-exist in the cause has the exclusion of the distinction of the subject of the proposition, therefore saying that it exists, this does not harm our Madhyamaka position. Why? Because we want to eliminate both the extreme of you Samkhyas considering that the effect pre-exists in the cause, which is not well grasped, and the extreme of the Sautrantikas and others considering that the effect does not pre-exist in the cause, which is not well grasped. Therefore, I eliminate your extreme that is not well grasped, and you eliminate the extreme of the Sautrantikas and others that is not well grasped, this is doing my friend. Just as it is said in the 《Lankavatara Sutra》: Those who refute my doctrine are kasaya robes.

Wearing the earth as clothing, speaking of having fruit and not having fruit, it will appear in the future. It is said so. Here, others say that if one says that having fruit and not having fruit does not arise, it becomes a harm to fame. To dispel that previous assertion, here the commentary is made, like an illusory man, speaking of having and not having, and doing things that should not be done, etc., because it is acknowledged by conventional truth, and because ultimate truth refutes the cause of making having fruit and not having fruit, there is no fault, as it is said, and there is no fault because it does not contradict the two truths. Because everything does not arise, this is also a vulnerable statement, because the fruit already exists in the cause, because there is arising, thus making a close-taking reason, because it is manifest, and there is no example in conventional terms. As it is said, the commentator previously refuted the Samkhyas, etc., saying that because everything does not arise, the fruit already exists in the cause, and that the doctrine is not reasonable because it is a vulnerable statement. How is that a vulnerable statement? The Samkhyas say that the fruit already exists in the cause, because everything does not arise. If you reverse it, the fruit already exists in the cause, because there is arising. You must make such a close-taking syllogism. Thus, if you reverse it, because everything does not arise, then because there is arising, that becomes a reason. If it appears like that, what fault is there? Therefore, the fault of the fruit of the cause existing in ultimate truth and the meaning of that reason not being established, let alone, for the time being, even in conventional terms, it also becomes the fault of having no example, because the fruit already exists in the cause, because there is arising, like so-and-so, because there is no such example. Here, others say that if we say that the reason why the fruit already exists in the cause is not reasonable because it is a vulnerable statement because everything does not arise, then you, the fruit in the cause,
