Because there is a cause, to show the argument that the effect exists before the cause. This also only shows that the effect exists before the cause, because for something that does not exist, the entity of the cause does not exist. If the effect does not exist before the cause, then for it, the entity of the cause will also become non-existent. If it is not like that, then because there is a cause, it is also only that the effect exists before the cause, so it is said. Just like this, for an effect that does not exist, the entity of the cause does not exist. If the effect does not exist before the cause, for example, fruits like yogurt, etc., which later become apparent through conditions, for things that are about to arise, the entity of the cause, such as milk, etc., will also become non-existent. If it is not like that, because for them the entity of the cause exists, so because there is a cause, it is also only that the effect exists before the cause, so it is said. Like this, in order to show the common inference of the five arguments that the effect exists before the cause, for milk, yogurt is only existing before it, because if it exists, it will arise. For what, what is not existing before it, then even if it exists, it will not arise, so it is said. They are the subject, the dharma to be proven, showing the concomitance of the proving dharma, and showing the contradiction with examples of dissimilar classes. Here, for what cause, what effect is not existing before it, for example, for sand, oil is not existing before it, even if there is sand, oil will not arise. For the milk cause, the yogurt effect is existing before it, because if there is milk, yogurt will arise, so it is only that the effect exists before the cause, so it is said. In response to saying this, here the commentator himself, for it, because it does not act on something that does not exist here, so that is not a property of the subject, the meaning of the reason is not established, so it is said. The Samkhyas, with the property of not acting on something that does not exist, argue that the effect exists before the cause in the cause, that is because it is not a property of the subject, the meaning of the reason is not established, so it is shown. How is it? The Samkhyas think that the subject is the cause with the property, the dharma to be proven is that the effect exists before the cause, so it is established.

Sa. Regarding the dharma of that side, the proposition, "because it does not act on non-existence," is incorrect. Likewise, your proposition, "the effect pre-exists in the cause," is also not so, because the basis is not established. No matter how you state the dharma of the proposition, your proposition cannot be established. However, temporarily speaking through the means of rational cause, if you say that in order to establish the dharma of the proposition that "the effect pre-exists in the cause," it is because it acts on existence, then perhaps it might be acceptable merely in terms of terminology. Your saying, "because it does not act on non-existence," is like someone saying, in order to establish the proposition that "sound is permanent," "because everything is impermanent." Just as that is not a dharma of the proposition because it is unrelated, similarly, your saying, in order to establish the proposition that "the effect pre-exists in the cause," "because it does not act on non-existence," is also not a dharma of the proposition because it is unrelated. Therefore, the meaning of the proposition is not established. Here, if the Samkhyas say: What we said, "because it does not act on non-existence," is not established as a proposition, but is established as an example of dissimilar dharma. Therefore, like a sky flower, a condition does not manifest what did not exist before; but like milk as a cause, a condition manifests the effect, yogurt, which existed before. Therefore, if we reverse from the aspect of "not acting on non-existence," it will become acting on existence, and that will only establish that the effect pre-exists. In order to answer this proposition that they extracted from before, the explanation is being done here. By closely applying "because it always acts as an example of dissimilar dharma," in order to manifest the proposition, in terms of terminology, the meaning is not established and the meaning is contradictory, because acting on existence is impossible, and acting on non-existence is possible. Thus it was said. If we examine what the Samkhyas said, "because it does not act on non-existence," as an example of dissimilar dharma, then, like a sky flower, a condition does not manifest what did not exist before. If we reverse from this aspect, a condition manifests the yogurt that pre-exists in milk, thus closely applying.
