B. One should uphold and not accept or reject its words, because it depends on what is taken, like offerings. If, nominally, one is no longer the taker, called Devadatta, and is no longer what is taken, then one should not take; and the taker is, and is not, called Devadatta, what is taken is and is not, then one should not take, etc. For these also, because of the difference in assertions, the remaining parts of the combination of food are extensively explained as before. These are the three concordant aspects of examining the taker. Similarly, if nominally it is already what is taken, and is also the taker, the taking of what is called Devadatta is not, because it depends on the taker, like the continuum of offerings that is no longer what is taken. If nominally it is no longer what is taken, and the taker is not, called Devadatta, is not what is taken, and what is taken is and is not, the taker is and is not, the taking of what is called Devadatta is not, etc. For these also, because of the difference in assertions, the remaining parts of the combination of food are extensively explained as before. These are the three concordant aspects of examining what is taken. Similarly, the discordant aspects should also be stated, that is, the six discordant aspects should also be applied appropriately, as explained in the chapter on the agent and the action. Because the taker and what will be taken, etc., are not established nominally, this shows the reason why the nine examinations are unreasonable. Here, the meaning of the reason is not established, and the example is what is to be established, and it lacks the dharma to be established and is absent, and if the reason is considered to be other, it will become contradictory in meaning, this is the conclusion and the result of valid cognition. In order to show how nominally the agent and the action, and the taker and what is taken are unreasonable, similarly all things are also equally unreasonable. How

Similarly, just as the truly existent agent and the proximately grasping agent of actions and so forth are eliminated, so too, by agents and actions, other things should also be known. Things such as cause and effect known to oneself and others, qualities and those possessing qualities, characteristics and the basis of characteristics, parts and those possessing parts, etc., should also be known. Things such as cause and effect being dependent, and effect also being established dependent on cause, etc., are conventional, but not ultimately existent, it is said. A cause is said to exist when it produces an effect. Other than that, it does not exist. An effect is said to exist when it is produced again. Other than that, it does not exist. Similarly, the remaining things such as qualities and those possessing qualities should also be applied. Dividing the aspects of examination into nine nines, it should be shown that it is unreasonable and that apart from relying on these to posit them, the characteristic by which they would be established in any other way is unreasonable. Now, the agent and action, the proximately grasping agent and the proximately grasped, cause and effect, quality and the possessor of quality, characteristic and the basis of characteristic, part and the possessor of part, etc., as it has been shown that things are established dependently, these are conventional, but not ultimately existent, as the master has established with verses. In brief, it is declared. By relying on that, the commentary here itself extensively shows the distinctions of these. Why does the commentator explain these distinctions in detail? In order to show the necessity and intention, for those who are attached to the truly existent nature of causes and effects, etc., in order to eliminate the thorn of their attachment, therefore, having accepted the words of the master, one should analyze them slightly, it is said. In reality, what has become milk does not become yogurt, because it depends on the effect, for example, like similar causes, which shows that the nature of the cause does not produce the nature of the effect, which is shown by inference. These are the subject and what is to be established.
