Just as it has been shown that it itself is not also Isvara. Therefore, the source spoken by the Blessed One is to enable the individuals of the Hearer Vehicle to separately understand the meaning of the term "selflessness of persons," so it cannot show the very selflessness of phenomena. If it could, then accepting other Mahayana would be meaningless, and since it cannot, therefore, the Blessed One also spoke of illusion and echo, etc., as examples of the selflessness of formations, and this is also spoken of as an example of the selflessness of persons. Saying that all phenomena are selfless is also spoken of for the meaning of the selflessness of persons, and not spoken of for the meaning of the self-naturelessness of phenomena. Moreover, the word "self" is also the word for "person," and not the word for the self-nature of phenomena, so the venerable Buddhapalita said that these are examples, meanings, and words of the selflessness of phenomena, which is not reasonable. In this regard, the meaning of the debate here is that the opponent first refutes the fault of the argument stated in the debate, and thereby shows that formations are of their own nature, which is the conclusion and the result of valid cognition. In the seventh chapter on the debate on examining arising, abiding, and ceasing, viewing the meaning of the debate as the result of valid cognition is because the opponent previously asserted that the aggregates, elements, and sense bases have the nature of combination, so first it must be truly held that the combined aggregates, elements, and sense bases do indeed have the nature of combination, because they possess the characteristics of combination such as arising, etc. By refuting the faults of these arguments, it is shown that formations are indeed without self-nature. In order to show the qualities of showing that formations are without self-nature, and in order to dispel the saying of others that showing that formations are without self-nature is merely establishing a dry treatise, therefore, here it must also be established by a reliable source of scripture, therefore, the Blessed One said in the Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom: Subhuti, how much is formation?

And it was said, "It is merely false." Similarly, in the Perfection of Wisdom itself, it is said, "Not to practice on the conditioned, and not to practice on the unconditioned, that is to practice on the Perfection of Wisdom." And it was said. Similarly, in other Mahāyāna sutras, it is said, "All dharmas abide in Suchness. Whatever is Suchness, there is neither conditioned nor unconditioned. Where there is neither conditioned nor unconditioned, there is no duality. Where there is no duality, that is Suchness." And it was said. Similarly, in the Sutra Requested by Brahma Viseṣacitta, it is said, "Brahma, what difference is there between conditioned and unconditioned dharmas?" It was said, "Mañjuśrī, the difference between conditioned and unconditioned dharmas is merely nominal. A Bodhisattva who holds this dhāraṇī does not have pride or attachment to conditioned and unconditioned dharmas." And so on. Similarly, in the Sutra Requested by the Bhagavatī Mother Perfection of Wisdom, the Utter Subduer, it is said, "Utter Subduer, form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are neither conditioned nor unconditioned. Whatever form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are, neither conditioned nor unconditioned, that is the Perfection of Wisdom. Form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are neither of the nature of arising nor of the nature of ceasing. Whatever form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are, neither of the nature of arising nor of the nature of ceasing, that is the Perfection of Wisdom. Apart from discrimination, there is no conditioned or unconditioned. Like foolish children, like a barren woman seeing a son in a dream, they grasp at conditioned and unconditioned." And so on, these are established, thus it was said. Therefore, these reliable statements are established, that is, the conditioned.
