Here, all the objections of the outsiders are manifestly attached to the three characteristics of conditioned phenomena, therefore these outsiders say that birth and so on are definitely existent, because they are apprehended by direct perception, like form. This is said to be one inference. Birth and so on are definitely existent, because there is an agent, like form. This is said to be the second inference. Birth and so on are definitely existent, because they are apprehended by non-different continua, like form. This is said to be the third inference. Those inferences should also be connected in order with the subject, the object to be proven, the proving property, and the example. For example, form is definitely existent because it is apprehended by the direct perception of the eye and so on, and the name of agent is applied because there are causes and conditions, and sentient beings commonly apprehend it with non-different continua. Similarly, birth and so on are also definitely existent because they are apprehended by the direct perception of the eye and so on, and the name of agent is applied because there are causes and conditions, and sentient beings commonly apprehend it with non-different continua. In order to show that the three reasons of the three inferences stated by the outsiders are uncertain, the teacher has stated the three examples of dreams and so on in order. In the world, dreams are also seen to be apprehended by the direct perception of mind and so on, therefore, why should birth and so on be definitely existent just because they are apprehended by direct perception, like form? Or, because they are apprehended by direct perception, like dreams, why should birth and so on necessarily become non-existent? Because it is uncertain, the first inference stated by the outsiders is not established. Similarly, in the world, illusions also have an agent, an illusionist, and causes and conditions, therefore, why should birth and so on be definitely existent just because there is an agent, like form?

Is it only because of this? Or, because there is an author, for example, like an illusion, it is not necessarily just that there is no birth, etc., so the second inference stated by the other party is not established. Similarly, in the world, the city of Gandharvas is also seen as being held by different lineages, so, is it only because it is held by different lineages, for example, like form, that there must be birth, etc.? Or, because it is held by different lineages, for example, like the city of Gandharvas, it is not necessarily just that there is no birth, etc., so the third inference stated by the other party is not established. In short, these are refuting the other party's arguments through reason, thereby showing that birth, etc., are not self-existent in the ultimate sense, but exist like dreams, etc., in the conventional sense. Now, this will be proven by the measure of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles. First, in order to show the proof by the scriptural measure of the Lesser Vehicle, the Blessed One also said in the Hearer Vehicle, in order to counteract the afflictive obscurations, because the nature of self and what belongs to self does not exist, so it appears as such: 'Form is like a mass of foam, feeling is like a bubble, perception is like a mirage, formations are like a plantain tree, consciousness is like an illusion.' He taught in this way. That is to say, in the Hearer Vehicle, in the ultimate sense, all phenomena are not the nature of the self of a person and what belongs to the self,

Actions are like water trees." This is because there is no essence to be specified. "Consciousness is like an illusion." This is because there is no self-nature to be specified. "Having seen that, he spoke." This is to say, it is a synonym for the words spoken by the Buddha Bhagavan. In some scriptures, it is also said to be spoken by the Kinsman of the Sun. In order to show that it is proven by the measure of the Great Vehicle's scriptural authority. In the Great Vehicle, although all conditioned things are without self-nature, they appear as such and are taught as such, therefore, as an antidote to afflictions and obscurations of knowledge. As it is said: "Stars, illusions, lamps, phantoms, dewdrops, bubbles, dreams, lightning, and clouds, one should view conditioned things in this way." Thus it is said. In the Great Vehicle, in the ultimate truth, all phenomena are without self-nature, but in the conventional truth, the aspects of the nature of illusion and so forth appear as such. Although there is no self-nature in the ultimate truth, in the conventional truth, it only appears as the nature of illusion and so forth. In order to teach it in this way, attachment to it becomes afflictions and obscurations of knowledge. Therefore, as an antidote to that, it is said that all conditioned things are like stars and so forth. Therefore, it is shown that in the ultimate truth, there is no self-nature, but in the conventional truth, it should only be accepted as being like stars and so forth. Among them, the verses such as "Stars, illusions, lamps, phantoms" show the four characteristics of conditioned phenomena: the characteristic of self-nature, the characteristic of the object of experience, the characteristic of realizing faults, and the characteristic of realizing definite emergence. Among them, the dependent arising of how the entities of the five aggregates appear is called conditioned phenomena because it is made by the collection of causes and conditions. The characteristic of the self-nature of all of these is shown by the three metaphors of "stars, illusions, lamps, phantoms." The so-called star, just as stars appear at night but do not appear during the day, so too, this conditioned phenomenon, if there is the darkness of the fault of ignorance, it appears, but when the light of the sun of wisdom arises, it does not appear, so the self-nature is like a star.
