Shinno! In order to show the example of "like a Gandharva city," it is said, "How the Gandharva city has vast pits, doors and gatehouses, and white rooftops, pleasant courtyards, windows, and multi-story buildings, which are the cause of generating the concept of a city." This shows the essence of a Gandharva city. Now, in order to show the meaning symbolized by these three examples, it is said, "Thus is birth, thus is abiding, thus is said to be cessation." This is connected with "The Blessed One, like dreams, illusions, and Gandharva cities, spoke of birth, abiding, and cessation in the conventional sense." If someone asks, for whom was it said? Therefore, it is said, "For those upright ones whose eyes of wisdom are fully opened, it is the cause of generating the concept of conditioned arising, etc." For those yogis whose eyes of wisdom are fully opened, who can see the true nature of all dharmas, in order to establish the doctrine of conventional truth, it is the cause of generating the wisdom of the characteristics of conditioned phenomena and understanding the basis of those characteristics. For those who are not wise, in order to show how they cling to reality, it is said, "Those ignorant ones whose eyes of wisdom are closed, like dreams, etc., think that things arise, abide, and cease, thereby generating pride in the true meaning." Those ordinary people who do not understand the true nature of various dharmas, regarding the birth, abiding, and cessation spoken by the Blessed One, are like clinging to dreams as true in sleep, and not understanding the causes of illusions and Gandharva cities, clinging to reality in that way, thinking that formations also arise, abide, and cease in the ultimate sense, thereby generating pride in the true meaning. Therefore, since both the wise and the unwise acknowledge that birth, etc., exist on the level of convention, the basis for tenets, arguments, and examples, etc., cannot be established.

“Without fault” is the concluding remark. For example, just as dreams appear, illusions are created, and cities of gandharvas arise, exist, and are destroyed, but in reality, they do not arise, exist, or are destroyed. Similarly, although the Blessed One has taught about the arising, abiding, and ceasing of conditioned phenomena, in reality, there is no producer, no abider, and no destroyer. However, in order to establish the truth of conventional reality, we also acknowledge that for the wise, it is taught through the power of conventional terms. For the unwise, it becomes the very cause of increasing pride. Therefore, we Madhyamikas have no fault of not establishing tenets, reasons, examples, and so forth in conventional reality. Some say that the three examples of dreams and so on are shown in order to show the three kinds of conceptualization other than the cause of the arising of afflictions. It is said that in this scripture, three examples such as dreams are spoken of, why is that? Here, some who speak only of consciousness say that those who say that the cause of the arising of afflictions is the existence of objects, think that external objects are real, but that is not the case. In order to show the three conceptualizations that are different from that, namely, the completely imputed, the dependent, and the thoroughly established, the three examples of dreams, illusions, and cities of gandharvas are shown in order. They say that just as dreams are completely imputed, experiencing memory, dharma, non-dharma, and the causes of divine blessings, encountering desirable and undesirable objects, being connected with the results of proximate causes, and when examined, although without self-nature, existing in name only, etc., merely the cause of mind becomes the object, and due to the power of complete imputation, the arising of afflictions occurs. Similarly, even without external objects, due to the cause of the accumulation of traces of elaboration on the alaya consciousness, the conceptualization arises from the conceptual mind, fabricating the appearance of the grasper and the grasped, and due to the clinging to the completely imputed like a dream.

I, too, will thus experience the arising of all afflictions. Just as from illusion, from the illusionist and the special power of mantras and medicine, the nature of elephants, bulls, women, and places, etc., appears, becoming objects of the senses. Although they have no inherent nature, they are said to exist because they are the cause of delusion. Due to attachment to the phenomena arising from the power of other causes of illusion, the arising of all afflictions will occur. Similarly, due to attachment to name and form, etc., the characteristics of formations, appearing as the aspects of grasper and grasped, the dependent arising of phenomena, the causal condition of all phenomena, the other-powered, illusion-like Alaya-consciousness, the arising of all afflictions will also occur. Just as with a Gandharva city, with its vast abyss, gates and gatehouses, white and delightful rooftops, moonlit courtyards, windows, and storied buildings, the cause of the arising of the thought of a city, due to attachment to what is completely established in the sky, the arising of all afflictions will occur. Similarly, when the conceptualization of grasper and grasped is abandoned, and the Alaya-consciousness is transformed, due to attachment to the completely established nature of the Tathagata's body adorned with marks and signs, and phenomena like a Gandharva city, the arising of all afflictions will also occur, they say. To refute what they say, and to explain another interpretation of the meaning of the verses illustrating the three examples, therefore, the commentary is made here. Some others say that the opponent's assertions about birth, etc., are indeed existent, because they are objects of direct perception, because there is an agent, and because they are apprehended by an undifferentiated continuum, like form. To show that these are uncertain, the three examples of dreams, etc., are explained in order, and so on. Some others say that this is the commentator's statement, therefore, the phrase 'The teacher Well-Protected says, thus it is said' should be connected.
