Because there cannot be something that is in the process of ceasing apart from what has ceased and what has not ceased, and because there would be two faults, it is said. Or, in ultimate reality, something in the process of ceasing does not become ceased, because it is clearly oriented towards the passage of time, just like wanting to arise or like the present. These are respectively the subject, the property to be proven, the proving property, and the example, to be applied in order. For example, wanting to arise or the present, because it is clearly oriented towards the passage of time, does not become ceased, similarly, something in the process of ceasing also does not become ceased because it is clearly oriented towards the passage of time. Or, if one thinks that something in the process of ceasing means that a little has ceased and a little has not ceased, then even so, that part of it that has ceased does not become ceased, because its cessation would be meaningless. That part of it that has not ceased also does not become ceased, because it is empty of cessation, like the future. If it is said that something in the process of ceasing means that it is oriented towards cessation, then the refutation and examination is: what is that? Is it something that has ceased? Or is it something that has not ceased? The answer is the same: what has ceased does not become ceased, because its cessation would be meaningless. What has not ceased also does not become ceased, because it is empty of cessation, like the future. Furthermore, regarding this, if something in the process of ceasing is considered to be a little ceased and a little not ceased, or something else that is ceased or not ceased, then if what has ceased and what has not ceased is obstructed by cessation, for the moment, that part of it that has ceased is not obstructed by that cessation, and what has ceased is also not in the process of ceasing, because if it has ceased, it is not in the process of ceasing, and it is said that what is in the process of ceasing obstructs what is in the process of ceasing. If that little bit that has ceased only ceases without cessation, then the remainder of it must also cease in the same way, only without cessation. Or, what difference is there to be stated between that part of it that only ceases without cessation and a part that is ceased by cessation? If that part of it that has ceased is also only by cessation,

If it is prevented, then like this, the un-ceased is made to cease by cessation. What is ceasing is not what makes it cease. Furthermore, whatever little of it has ceased, that is not made to cease by cessation, because it is already ceased. Therefore, whatever remainder of it is un-ceased, that will become 'is made to cease by cessation.' If that is the case, then what was said, 'what is ceasing makes it cease,' will be ruined. If even that little bit of it that has ceased is again made to cease by cessation, then for that, it would become something with a distinction made by two cessations, but it will not become that. Because for what has already ceased, no action is undertaken for the sake of preventing it again, therefore what is ceasing also does not make it cease. Those three examinations have shown that even if birth is accepted, cessation is not reasonable. Now, in order to show that even if birth is not accepted, cessation is not reasonable. Or, in order to prevent the birth of all things. "What is not born, how does it cease?" For what is not born, cessation is impossible, because it is not born, like the son of a barren woman." This was said. Those are the subject, the dharma to be proven, the proving dharma, and the example, to be applied in order. For example, the son of a barren woman, because he is not born, cessation is impossible, likewise, what is not born, also because it is not born, cessation is impossible. Therefore, like this, whether birth is accepted or not accepted, cessation cannot be established in any way, this is the conclusion. Furthermore, for this, if cessation is examined as abiding or not abiding, that is not possible in either case, by saying this, it shows that for those two examinations, cessation is not reasonable. For this, temporarily, in order to show the previous examination. "Temporarily, for a thing that abides, cessation is not reasonable." For a living being that abides, cessation, which is incompatible with abiding, is not reasonable, because of abiding, this is well known, this was said. In order to show the second examination, if there is cessation for what does not abide, there is no fault, if it is said like this. "For a thing that does not abide, cessation is also not reasonable." Because of not abiding, like something that has ceased, this is what is thought, this was said. Those are the subject and the dharma to be proven.
