Similarly, because there is no darkness, a lamp does not illuminate its own nature and the nature of others where the lamp is located. Here, it is said that the sun's rays are bright and pleasant, mentioning two characteristics of the rays, because during the day, when there are no clouds, when the sun rises, the rays are bright but not pleasant. At noon, when the rays are covered by clouds, they are pleasant but not bright. In both of these cases, whatever is visible in the lower places needs to be illuminated by a lamp, therefore the brightness and pleasantness of the rays are mentioned. Or: Where are the lamp and what? Where it is, there is no darkness. 'No' means because it illuminates. This shows that the nature of the lamp is to illuminate. Previously, it was shown that the absence of darkness itself is the reason for establishment. This shows that illuminating itself is the reason for establishment, the difference is that it exists. Therefore, the inference here is that, in reality, it should be known that a lamp does not illuminate its own nature and the nature of others, because it illuminates, like the sun. These, the subject, the dharma to be proven, the reason for establishment, and the example, are arranged in order. For example, the sun illuminates, therefore the lamp does not illuminate, similarly, the lamp's own nature and the nature of others also illuminate, therefore the lamp does not illuminate. Similarly, the lamp does not illuminate, because the reasons are arising, being beneficial, being made, and being different due to the differences in conditions, etc., like earth, etc. It can also be said that the lamp's own nature and the nature of others do not illuminate, the reasons being that there is no darkness, and that it illuminates, these two are merely symbolic because they are close to the way of expressing characteristics. Similarly, the lamp does not illuminate its own nature and the nature of others, because it is arising, etc.

Again, it can be said, 'like earth and so on.' This shows that a lamp does not illuminate the nature of itself and others, because it arises, like earth. A lamp does not illuminate the nature of itself and others, because it is beneficial, like water. A lamp does not illuminate the nature of itself and others, because it is made, like fire. A lamp does not illuminate the nature of itself and others, because it is different due to the difference of conditions, like wind. Therefore, because there is no example, there is the fault of incomplete proof. This is both the conclusion and the result of valid cognition, because the opponent previously said that arising acts on the objects of the nature of oneself and others. Because it is its nature, like a lamp is the nature of illumination, so like illuminating the nature of oneself and others, because the stated example is not established, therefore in the previous tenet there is the fault of incomplete proof, so it is not acceptable, this is the concluding statement. Here it is said: 'By dispelling darkness, it is the illuminator.' Because the lamp is arising, it dispels darkness, because thereby there is no darkness for the object to be illuminated, and because the illuminator is illumination, therefore it will be said, 'By dispelling darkness, it is the illuminator.' Therefore, whatever is said, 'because there is no darkness,' that is not established, therefore the meaning of the reason is not established. It is also not without an example, because the lamp illuminates the object to be illuminated. This is both showing that there is no example in this way, and here also one's own school establishes that there is an example. Those people say, 'Because you say, the lamp and whatever things, when it is present there is no darkness.' Because of saying this, the reason stated by the two kinds of inference, for the object to be illuminated, because there is no darkness, and because it is the illuminator. Because of saying this, the lamp is illumination, therefore it will be said, 'By dispelling darkness, it is the illuminator,' therefore the lamp is arising, for the nature of oneself and others, etc., there is no darkness, this is what dispels darkness. Therefore.
