If one thinks that they are not exhausted, and thinks that they have no other characteristics of conditioned phenomena, then they are not aggregates. If they are not conditioned phenomena, then they will not become characteristics of conditioned phenomena either. If one also thinks that arising and so on are conditioned phenomena, and they will not be exhausted, because arising and so on can represent the nature of conditioned phenomena, this is the characteristic of conditioned phenomena. For example, just like the characteristics of auspiciousness and inauspiciousness, because there are no other characteristics of conditioned phenomena, exhaustion, abiding, and continuity will not be absent either. If one says this, then the other party will say that because arising and so on have no other characteristics, they will not be exhausted either, and they themselves can represent conditioned phenomena, so they are also characteristics. For example, the characteristics of auspiciousness, such as wheels and so on, and the characteristics of inauspiciousness, without other characteristics, will not be exhausted either, and they themselves can represent the basis of characteristics, so they are characteristics. This is their saying. In order to answer this saying, the commentators here think that, as said before, in reality, arising and so on, conditioned phenomena themselves are not the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, because they are conditioned phenomena, just like the basis of characteristics. Arising and so on are also similar to this, therefore one should not think that in reality arising and so on are conditioned phenomena. If so, then arising and so on have no other characteristics, they are neither conditioned phenomena, nor will they be exhausted, and they themselves can represent conditioned phenomena, so they are also characteristics. In order to answer this saying, arising and so on, even if they are not aggregates, they should not be the characteristics of aggregates. Just like this, the answer here is: If they are not, then they are not aggregates. This is how it is answered. Therefore, as the fault shown cannot be avoided. This is the conclusion, because through the two ways of examination, the characteristics have not been established, so the fault that the other party's reason has not been established, as shown before, cannot be avoided, and still exists. Chapter Thirty-Eight. Here is the Mother and Son Section.

They said: Although arising, abiding, and ceasing are conditioned phenomena, they will not fall into the fault of being endless. This is because the Sarvāstivāda school among the Śrāvakas believes that the characteristics of conditioned phenomena such as arising have other similar characteristics, and they interact with each other, so they will not fall into the fault of being endless. The so-called "Sarvāstivāda school" refers to a wandering ascetic named "Constant Follower" who, after ordaining in the Buddha's teachings, taught his disciples about the concept of a person similar to self-grasping. Those who regard these teachings as a mother are called the Sarvāstivāda school. To explain their tenets, suppose one asks: Why does a dharma produce itself and fifteen dharmas? Because that dharma, and its arising, its abiding, its ceasing, its association, its otherness from abiding, and if that dharma is white, then its true liberation, or if it is black, then its inverted liberation, if that dharma is renunciation, then its renunciation, or if it is not renunciation, then its non-renunciation will arise, these are called "wheel." Now, the arising of arising, the abiding of abiding, the ceasing of ceasing, the association of association, the otherness from abiding of otherness from abiding, and the true liberation of true liberation, or the inverted liberation of inverted liberation, the renunciation of renunciation, or the non-renunciation of non-renunciation will also arise, these are called "wheel of wheel," thus a dharma produces itself and fifteen dharmas. Among them, the fundamental arising produces fourteen dharmas excluding itself. The arising of arising only produces that fundamental arising. Abiding and so on are also the same, so they will not fall into the fault of being endless. They said this. Here, when any dharma among the dharmas such as consciousness arises, it is called itself and those fifteen dharmas.
