The term 'harmless' refers to the fact that the Sutra School asserts that phenomena arise from the power of specifically determined causes and conditions, and that the four characteristics of conditioned existence are present in a single continuum, in a single moment, at a single time. You, the Madhyamikas, say that such extremely dissimilar phenomena as arising, abiding, and ceasing occurring simultaneously in any phenomenon whatsoever should not be examined by those whose minds abide in ease. Therefore, their argument does not harm us. In response to this assertion, the commentator here states, 'Even if you fully contemplate in this way, because the continuum is not a substance,' and so forth. Sutra School followers, if you fully contemplate in this way, you should also know that it is unreasonable. If phenomena were solely substantial, then it would be acceptable to examine arising and so forth in its single continuum. However, since you assert momentariness, and the continuum is not a substance, how can the three characteristics possibly arise simultaneously in a single continuum? It is unreasonable. Because arising, abiding, and so forth are conceptually distinguished in dependence, the three characteristics are nominal truths, not ultimate truths. Alternatively, one conceives of arising in dependence on the stage of arising, and one conceives of abiding in dependence on what has arisen, and one conceives of ceasing in dependence on abiding. Thus, because arising, abiding, and so forth are conceptually distinguished in dependence, the three characteristics are nominal truths, not ultimate truths, just as long is conceived in dependence on short. Why are they not ultimate truths? Therefore, it is said, 'Because even at the time of abiding, there is no cessation that is incompatible with it.' Even at the time of arising and the time of abiding, there is no cessation that is incompatible with them. And at the time of ceasing, there are no arising and abiding that are incompatible with it. Therefore, the three characteristics do not exist simultaneously in one. This also does not go beyond the faults previously pointed out; this is a summary. That which the Sutra School fully contemplates is also like that. The Vaibhashikas say that the obtaining of self from what was previously unproduced is arising.

Furthermore, birth is birth, abiding is abiding, abiding decaying is aging, aging ceasing is death, so birth and so on arise in sequence, because they are not confused from conditioned phenomena, so those are established as characteristics. The Madhyamikas say that the three, birth and so on, cannot individually act as the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, which is unreasonable. Here, the Vaibhashikas say that the four characteristics of conditioned phenomena arise sequentially in each moment, because they are not confused as characteristics from the basis of characteristics, conditioned phenomena, so those are established as characteristics themselves. The Madhyamikas say that the three, birth and so on, cannot individually act as the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, which is unreasonable. In order to answer what they said, here it is explained that that is unreasonable. Because what is called a characteristic should never be confused from the thing that is the basis of the characteristic. For example, hardness will not be confused from earth, and the signs of a great person will not be confused from a great person. If the worldly accepted reasoning is like that, you say that the four characteristics arise sequentially in each moment, then in one moment, when the thing that is the basis of the characteristic arises, there is no other characteristic, so those are confused from the basis of the characteristic, therefore they are not the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, so your argument is unreasonable. In order to demonstrate this point, from the ultimate truth, birth and so on cannot be the characteristics of conditioned phenomena of things, because they arise sequentially. For example, the differences in the stages of clay, lumps, the potter's wheel, patting, and kneading are not the characteristics of the conditioned phenomena of a pot. These are respectively the subject, the property to be established, the reason, and the example. For example, the differences in the stages of clay and so on are not the characteristics of the conditioned phenomena of a pot because they arise sequentially. For example, a pot is initially in the stage of clay,
