Relying on just one separation, millions of schools of Lokayata (materialist) arose, saying: "Sentient beings with the cause of accumulating virtuous and non-virtuous karma in other lives will not be born here either. The past world also does not exist. Therefore, no one comes here from there either. There is also no other world to go to from here. Just as without karma and afflictions, simply mixing and pressing together jaggery, water, emblic myrobalan, haritaki, belleric myrobalan, rice flour, tree bark, etc., various kinds of jaggery wine with different flavors, potencies, and ripenings will arise, but they do not come from another world and are born here. Just as the power of simply mixing and pressing together the ingredients of jaggery, water, emblic myrobalan, haritaki, belleric myrobalan, rice flour, tree bark, etc., will turn into such jaggery wine. Similarly, the internal sense bases also arise from the aggregation of semen, blood, etc., without karma and afflictions. Furthermore, if a pile of flesh as large as Mount Meru is piled up, and rain falls there for seven days, then a pile of worms the size of the pile of flesh will arise. Did those many sentient beings come from another world?" They say this, and with many similar examples, they think that it arises from no cause. In order to dispel such wrong views, the venerable Nagarjuna said: "From no cause, whatever things, wherever, have never been born." This is what he said. Why? This is the explanation itself. If others think about why arising from no cause does not exist, then after examining this thought, the question is asked in the manner of welcoming doubts. Therefore, because there is no inference that proves it, and because there is the fault of damage to inference and fame, it is thought in this way, it is said. It is shown in this way: "The meaning of arising from no cause that you establish, because there is no inference that proves it. Like this, it is just words."

Therefore, things are not born from no cause. Furthermore, your proposition that "things are born from no cause" has the fault of being contradicted by subsequent inference, and also the fault of being contradicted by common knowledge, so things are not born from no cause. Also, the word "also" is meant to include both faults. It means that, like this, your proposition that "things are born from no cause," because there is no inference that proves it, and because your side has the fault of being contradicted by subsequent inference, and the fault of being contradicted by common knowledge, so the author of the sutra said, "Things are not born from no cause." This is a concluding statement. If asked, how is there the fault of being contradicted by subsequent inference? To explain this, it says, "The contradiction of its subsequent inference is," etc. To explain how there is the fault of being contradicted by subsequent inference, it says, "The internal sense bases that are conventionally accepted are not born from no cause, because they possess the nature of generality and particularity, like a sprout." Among them, "the internal sense bases that are conventionally accepted" is the subject of the proposition; "are not born from no cause" is the property to be established; "because they possess the nature of generality and particularity" is the property that establishes; "like a sprout" is the example, and they are connected in this way. Among them, "the internal sense bases that are conventionally accepted" refers to the internal sense bases that are conventionally accepted by the Madhyamikas, which are the eye, etc., and these are taken as the subject of the proposition here. "Are not born from no cause" is what is to be established, that is, to establish that the internal sense bases that are conventionally accepted are not born from no cause, and this is the property to be established here. "Because they possess the nature of generality and particularity," among them, "because they possess the nature of generality" refers to the six sense bases, the eye, etc.

Because for those (places), there exists a commonality called "sense-spheres." The so-called "having distinctiveness" is because for the six sense-spheres such as the eye, there exist individual distinctions, namely eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. Or, the so-called "having commonality" is because for all sense-spheres, there exists a commonality called "spheres, spheres." The so-called "having distinctiveness" is because there exists a distinction, namely the sense-spheres of humans, the sense-spheres of gods, the sense-spheres of animals. The so-called "-ness" refers to the common and distinct entities being common and distinct-ness. The so-called "having" is because of having common and distinct-ness, which is the dharma to be established here. For example, like a sprout, just as for a sprout, there also exists a generic commonality of all sprouts being called "sprout," and there also exists distinctiveness, namely the sprout of rice, the sprout of barley, and so on. For example, a sprout in conventional truth has common and distinct-ness, therefore it is not born without a cause. Just like that, it arises from a beginningless causal continuum, therefore it is not born without a cause. Similarly, the internal sense-sphere entities that are accepted in conventional truth also do not arise without a cause because they have common and distinct-ness. Just like that, it arises from a beginningless causal continuum, therefore it is not born without a cause. This is a concordant example here. Therefore, for the time being, consider that your establishment of arising without a cause has the fault of being contradicted by inference, therefore phenomena do not arise without a cause. If you ask: How does the fault of being contradicted by what is well-known exist? To show this, it is said, "The fault of being well-known is," and so on. To show how the fault of being contradicted by what is well-known exists, it is said: Whatever exists in this world is known to arise from a cause. For example, wool arises from yarn, and madder arises from dye, and so on.
