Chapter Ten. Regarding this, another teacher, Lodan, with his own commentary, considers the definition of the reason of "otherness" to be contradictory. Thus, the Madhyamikas acknowledge that the causes of the internal sense bases, such as the eye, like brightness, etc., exist in conventional truth. Having acknowledged this, when one wishes to assert otherness in ultimate truth, the brightness, etc., which accomplish the internal sense bases such as the eye, are definitely not the causes of the internal sense bases, because they are other. For example, like grains, etc. When making such a connecting statement, just as grains, etc., are not the cause of the eye, etc., in ultimate truth, similarly, in conventional truth, grains, etc., are also not the cause of the eye, etc., and brightness, etc., are also like grains, etc., and are not the cause of the eye, etc., even in conventional truth. Therefore, the reason of "otherness" contradicts the establishment that the causes of brightness, etc., are not the causes of the eye, etc., in conventional truth. As it is said: The dharma and the subject of the dharma, The nature of their difference, Because it establishes the opposite, it is contradictory. Because of this. After asking this question, here is how one should answer: If that is the case, even if my reason is contradictory, it is still true. Hasn't Lodan heard the fourth root of the "definition of contradiction"? Therefore, he only points out such a fault of contradictory reason to me without any distinction. Thus, in the fourth root of the "definition of contradiction," it says: If there is no harm, Then it is contradictory. Therefore, if there is no harm from scripture, harm from the world, harm from one's own words, harm from direct perception, and harm from inference in what Lodan says is contradictory, then at that time my reason is contradictory. If there is any of these five harms in what Lodan says is contradictory, then at that time my reason is not contradictory. Lodan

To say this contradiction, for example, the later scholars say, "Sound is not audible, because it arises after being sought, like a pot." Like this, from the reason of arising after being sought, one can explain the nature of having harm and not having harm. If the inference arising from the power of what is seen does not reverse, then it is without harm. However, because the scriptures, direct perception, and the world consider sound to be audible, the inference arising from the power of what is seen will be reversed, so it is harmful. Here, if the Elder Prajñāmati says this contradiction, what harm will there be? Like this, the Elder Prajñāmati is also a Madhyamaka, therefore, he will acknowledge that internal birthplaces and factors such as bindus exist in conventional truth. But here, it is said that bindus and so on are not factors of the eye and so on even in conventional truth. Therefore, firstly, the contradiction spoken by the Elder Prajñāmati has the harm of contradicting the scriptures. Conventional truth itself is spoken in the terminology of the world, and the world considers that internal birthplaces and so on arise from factors such as bindus in conventional truth. But here, it is said that bindus and so on are not factors of the eye and so on even in conventional truth. Therefore, the contradiction spoken by the Elder Prajñāmati also has the harm of contradicting the world. From the places of the eye and so on, in conventional truth, the six non-conceptual consciousnesses such as eye consciousness, which are focused on objects, will arise in front of their respective sense consciousnesses. But here, it is said that bindus and so on are not factors of the eye and so on even in conventional truth. Therefore, the contradiction spoken by the Elder Prajñāmati also has the harm of contradicting direct perception. Any contradictory words spoken by the Elder Prajñāmati are also merely arising in conventional truth. But here, the Elder Prajñāmati himself says that bindus and so on arising in conventional truth are not factors of the eye and so on. Therefore, the contradiction spoken by the Elder Prajñāmati also has the harm of contradicting his own words. Eye and so on
