The statement, "If the opposite side is not shown, then it is not a valid reason," is to address the doubts raised by logicians who attack with the fault of an uncertain reason when making explanations. The word "if" is the word used by the explainer himself to avoid the doubts of the logicians. The statement "there is a reason" means that the explainer previously said that the inner sources of arising, etc., do not arise from the self, because there is a reason. In the statement, "Not pointing out the opposite side, therefore it is not a valid reason," "opposite side" refers to the aspect of difference between dharma and the subject of dharma, and the meaning of the word is the opposite side. "Returning from the opposite side" means that in the opposite side, there is neither the thing to be established nor the dharma that can establish it, which is called returning from the opposite side. "Not pointing out" means not pointing out or explaining the return from the opposite side. "Therefore it is not a valid reason" means that the explainer previously said that the inner sources of arising, etc., do not arise from the self, because there is a reason, this statement is not a valid reason. Why? Because the reason for saying "because there is" is uncertain because the return from the opposite side is not pointed out, so it is not a valid reason. Because that is not a valid reason, the dharma to be established will not be established, this is a summary statement. That is to say, the definition of a valid reason is this: Showing the sign that possesses three aspects, it abides in the nature of the subject. The remaining two aspects are fully explained by example. This explains the reason that possesses three aspects. Among them, the three aspects are: existing in the thing to be inferred, existing in the similar, and being certain not to exist in the dissimilar. These three aspects also have three reasons: non-perception, self-nature, and result. Therefore, the three signs of the aspect of being certain to exist in the thing to be inferred are: from non-perception, inferring that things do not exist, for example: there is no thing here, because it is not perceived. From self-nature, inferring impermanence,

For things to be inferred, such as "sound is impermanent because it is made." For things to infer the cause from the result, such as "there is a cause here because the result is visible." The three signs of the way of being certain of existence in the similar side are: The similar example of inferring the non-existence of things from the invisible is "There is no thing in this place, because the invisible, tangible vase is invisible." The similar example of inferring impermanence from the nature is "This is a tree, because it is a sal tree." The similar example of inferring the cause from the result is "There is a lot of fire in this place, because the smoke is billowing." This is the meaning of these examples. The three signs of the way of being certain of non-existence in the dissimilar side are: The dissimilar example of inferring the non-existence of things from the invisible is "There is a thing in this place, because the visible, tangible vase is visible." The dissimilar example of inferring impermanence from the nature is "The sky is permanent because it is not made." The dissimilar example of inferring the cause from the result is "There is no fire in this well because there is water." This is the meaning of these examples. Therefore, if it is necessary to demonstrate the characteristics of reasoning by means of a sign that possesses three aspects, then here, by demonstrating that "the internal sources (Sanskrit: āyatana) are definitely not born from the self (Sanskrit: ātman) because they exist," there is also a sign of the way of being certain of existence in what is to be inferred. For example, by demonstrating "just as knowledge exists," there is also a sign of the way of being certain of existence in the similar side. Like this, since the sign of the way of being certain of non-existence in the dissimilar side has not been demonstrated, therefore the characteristics of reasoning are incomplete, so that which is called "reasoning exists" is uncertain, therefore it is not reasoning. If someone says this, then the answer to that is that here, the commentator says that merely because of non-existence, there is no reversal, therefore there is no fault for this and all of these. Among them, "merely because of non-existence" means merely because the dissimilar side does not exist. Like this, we Madhyamikas
