They are different. If it is not produced, then the meaning will not become different; the producer with one nature, the meaning is one, if it is not produced, the meaning will not become one, therefore, the cause of all destruction and so on is the cause of production. If the cause is blocked, then its fruits will not arise either. The world is also mostly very attached to production, and is manifestly attached to production, then, this treatise is entered in order to abandon special attachment and manifest attachment. If special attachment and manifest attachment are abandoned, then nirvana will be attained. Here, the teacher thinks that non-arising is first taught. Therefore, it is said, "Manifestly making discriminations on the arising that is considered by others," where "considered by others" means that in reality, you yourself do not have the intention of discriminating on arising in your mind. Like this, the arising that other beings consider to be real, manifestly making those discriminations, connect it in this way. "Discriminating on arising" means that with discrimination, arising is discriminated and grasped, those are discriminating on arising, it is a synonym for "aspect of arising." "Manifestly making" means placing it before the mind, that is, making it the object of focus. "Discriminating on arising

That activity is merely labeled as Dharma. That which is labeled as Dharma has neither birth nor cessation. It is merely expressed in terms of names and conventions. Such are the words spoken. That scripture should also be said to be spoken by the Thus-Gone One, for others do not have the characteristics of scripture. As it is said: Scripture is a trustworthy word, one should know that the exhaustion of faults is scripture. Because faults are exhausted, one will not speak false words, because there is no cause. Such is the explanation. Therefore, it is through reasoning and those scriptures that one investigates. Regarding the phrase "birth is intolerable in all aspects," "birth" refers to the conceptualization of birth that is thoroughly examined by others. Regarding the phrase "in all aspects," it refers to all aspects of the four extremes: from self, from other, from both, and from no cause. Regarding the phrase "intolerable," it means that birth is intolerable in that it has a valid reason. Regarding the phrase "certainty in oneself," it means that when the teacher realizes that the birth of things in those ways is unreasonable and illogical, at that time, the teacher himself truly generates the certainty that all dharmas are without birth, and he understands that truth in his heart. Regarding the phrase "by its power," it refers to the power of the teacher himself generating certainty. By its power, just as I have realized the truth of all dharmas, I now think that I should also teach it to other sentient beings. "Not from self, not from other, not from both, not from no cause, whatever things, wherever, have never been born." Having said this, it should be connected in this way. Thus it is taught: Just as when I examined through reasoning and scriptures, I truly saw the birth of things and understood that truth, it is just like that. Sentient beings also understand that truth through this very method of meditation. Therefore, in order to teach the method of meditation, this treatise on the Middle Way should be taught. Regarding the phrase "this is the general arrangement of the proposition," "this" refers to "not from self, not from other, not from both, not from no cause."

Wherever any object may be, there is never any arising. This is the verse that was spoken. 'Propositions' means that things do not arise from themselves, this is one proposition. They do not arise from others, this is the second proposition. They do not arise from both, this is the third proposition. They do not arise from no cause, this is the fourth proposition. The general meaning of these propositions is to connect or show them closely. Why are only four propositions made and not more? When the ninety-six kinds of strange views are separated, they become three hundred and sixty-three opponents, all of whom are included in these four categories, and there is no fifth form other than this, therefore only four propositions are made. Now, what does 'not from self' mean? This is a question of what is not from self. As an answer, it is explained by saying, 'Arising is never present.' etc. If you ask what is not from self? Then it should be connected as: not from self, arising is never present. The word 'etc.' includes 'wherever any object may be.' Therefore, if you ask what is not from self? It should be shown as: not from self, wherever any object may be, arising is never present. What does it mean to 'connect with each one'? It should be: not from self, wherever any object may be, arising is never present. And, not from others, wherever any object may be, arising is never present. And, not from both, wherever any object may be, arising is never present. And, not from no cause, wherever any object may be, arising is never present. Thus, it should be connected with each one. 'Self' is a synonym for 'oneself.' If there is any doubt, why is it said here that 'self' is a synonym for 'oneself'? In this way, the meaning of self can be connected to five forms.
