The term "dispute" refers to those who want to not do or refute this treatise called "Madhyamaka Karika", who are those who want to refute the author of the treatise. The term "if you say" refers to those authors who want to refute the treatise, who would say, understand it this way. The term "having the characteristics of dependent arising, no arising, etc." refers to that which arises from the Prajnaparamita, the basis of characteristics is called dependent arising, the characteristics are no arising, no cessation, no severance, no permanence, no coming, no going, not different meanings, not one meaning, possessing these characteristics, is the main body of this treatise called "Madhyamaka Karika". The term "because it is unconditioned" means that, in this way, you Madhyamikas would say that the dependent arising, no arising, etc. that arise from the Prajnaparamita, because they are not conditioned, are therefore unconditioned, and are not common with the Shravakas, etc. The term "not established in our own side either" means that, if that is the case, in our own side, that is, in the school of the Shravaka Vaibhashikas, it is also established that having the characteristics of dependent arising, no arising, etc. is unconditioned, because in our own side, these four unconditioned dharmas are also considered to be real, what are these four? They are space, non-selective cessation, selective cessation, and suchness. What are our unconditioned dharmas that have the characteristics of dependent arising, no arising, etc.? Like this, "entering into that impurity, dust and arising thought", from there immediately are the heat stage, peak stage, forbearance stage, the highest mundane dharma, the non-outflow knowledge of dharma forbearance, dharma knowledge, subsequent knowledge of dharma forbearance, subsequent knowledge, in this way, with the sequence of sixteen moments of mind, at the end of all learners, with the vajra-like samadhi extinguishing all afflictions, and the arising of the knowledge of non-arising.

This (ultimate truth) is our dependent arising, the characteristics of non-arising, etc., and is unconditioned. Why is it called dependent arising? And why is it called unconditioned? In this way, it is from one cause, one after another, that it arises, so it is called dependent arising. Because it has no obvious cause, it is called unconditioned. As it is said: 'Like throwing a stone into the sky, the hand's strength is the cause that can still be seen, but the stone falls down without a cause, only the upward throw is the cause.' Therefore, for example, throwing a stone into the air has the cause of the hand's strength; the stone falling down has no cause, only the upward throw is the cause. The upward throw has an obvious cause, the downward fall has no cause, it is like arising from a continuous cause. Our understanding of cessation and non-arising also has the continuous cause of first meditating on impurity, etc., so it is also called dependent arising. Because there is no obvious cause, it is also called unconditioned. Therefore, the dependent arising, the characteristics of non-arising, etc., that arise from the Prajnaparamita, is the unconditioned, which is also established in our school. Dependent arising is not unique to the Hearers, this sentence means that, like this, the dependent arising, the characteristics of non-arising, etc., that arise from the Prajnaparamita, is the unconditioned, which is also established in our school, therefore, dependent arising is not unique to the Hearers, it is only common, this is the meaning of this sentence. Therefore, writing a treatise is unreasonable, this sentence means that, because dependent arising is not unique to the Hearers, so writing a treatise here, therefore writing this treatise called 'Madhyamaka' is unreasonable, this is to prevent writing a treatise. They say that, because this treatise prevents the self-nature of all conditioned dharmas.

Therefore, even Buddhists do not accept this treatise, which is why the Sravaka Vaibhashikas say that. To answer such objections, an explanation is given here, because the characteristics of dependent origination, such as non-arising, are shown through negation; and because there is no need for inference to show that dependent origination exists as unconditioned, and so on. This means that the Sravaka Vaibhashikas used to say: Dependent origination has the characteristics of non-arising, etc., because it is unconditioned, so it is also established in our school. Therefore, dependent origination is not unique to the Sravakas. To answer them, the unconditioned dependent origination arising from the Prajnaparamita, and the unconditioned dependent origination spoken of in the tenets of the Sravaka Vaibhashikas, are very different. Therefore, dependent origination is not unique to the Sravakas, so writing this treatise is not unreasonable, this is how it is explained. Among them, the statement that dependent origination, which has the characteristics of non-arising, etc., is shown through negation, means: I, the dependent origination arising from the Prajnaparamita, which is the basis of characteristics, has the characteristics of non-arising, non-ceasing, non-severing, non-permanence, non-coming, non-going, non-different meaning, and non-one meaning, which is established as the body of the treatise called the "Madhyamaka Shastra," that is, non-arising, non-ceasing, etc., are shown through negation. And you say that "non-arising" is admitted as an existent, so the difference is very great. Therefore, dependent origination is not unique to the Sravakas, so writing the treatise is not unreasonable, this is the concluding statement. For the statement that there is no need for inference to show that dependent origination exists as unconditioned, it means...
