If one intends to compose a treatise in order to fully ripen all sentient beings, then, in order to fully ripen one's own Buddha-dharma, one first praises and prostrates to the pleasing deities. This is so that the undertaking begun with the full ripening of one's own Buddha-dharma may be accomplished, and so that external sentient beings may be fully ripened. Thus, the master has attained the first bodhisattva ground, the Joyful One, and possesses the means to fully ripen his own Buddha-dharma and to fully ripen external sentient beings, which is the characteristic of the fruit's own benefit. This is the master's explanation of the characteristic of the fruit's own benefit. Thus, the characteristic of the fruit's own benefit is that, having attained the first bodhisattva ground, the Joyful One, and possessing the means to fully ripen one's own Buddha-dharma and to fully ripen external sentient beings, then what is the characteristic of the fruit's benefit to others? Therefore, it is said, "Because he possesses a mind moistened by the water of compassion itself, he cherishes and desires to understand beings, desiring them to realize." Here, "Because he possesses a mind moistened by the water of compassion itself" indicates the cause of composing the treatise, which is the characteristic of the fruit's benefit to others. "Cherishes and desires to understand beings" indicates the object for whose benefit the treatise is composed, which is the characteristic of the fruit's benefit to others. "Desiring them to realize" indicates the actual composition of the treatise, which is the characteristic of the fruit's benefit to others. So, why is the treatise composed? Therefore, it is said, "Because he possesses a mind moistened by the water of compassion itself." The master, because he possesses a mind moistened by the water of compassion itself, cherishes and desires to understand beings, desiring them to realize, composes the treatise, and not for the sake of gain and honor with a tainted mind. Here, "compassion itself" refers to the compassion of

The object is compassion itself. The so-called water of compassion itself means that compassion itself is like water, so it is the water of compassion itself. To moisten means to moisten, soak, and differentiate with the water of compassion itself. Having compassion means that the teacher who has the compassion moistened by the water of compassion itself is certain. If you ask for whose benefit the treatise was written? Therefore, it is said, "Because they value following sentient beings and want them to understand." It means that because they value following sentient beings and want them to understand, they must understand, and the treatise was written for their benefit. Among them, "Because they value following sentient beings and want them to understand," among them, "sentient beings" refers to sentient beings produced by karma and afflictions. To value following means to be in accordance with following. To want to understand means to want to understand and know this Madhyamaka treatise. In this way, for which sentient being, there is the intention to follow, and who wants to understand and know this Madhyamaka treatise, that is the person who values following sentient beings and wants them to understand, this is certain. There are four types of people here: those who understand when the beginning is mentioned, those who understand after detailed explanation, those who need guidance, and those who cling to words. Among them, those who understand when the beginning is mentioned refer to those who can understand the meaning simply by mentioning the beginning and raising it. Those who understand after detailed explanation refer to those who can understand the meaning after detailed explanation and extensive explanation. Those who need guidance are those who do not understand the clear meaning even after summarizing, and do not understand even if the indicator says, "Do it like this." Those who need to be guided by action to understand the meaning are like the blind and the deaf. Those who cling to words are those who do not understand the meaning in any way and cling to words. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: "Like a child holding the tip of a finger, not seeing the moon, so those who are attached to letters do not see my suchness." It's like what was said. Among them, those who understand when the beginning is mentioned, those who understand after detailed explanation, those who need guidance
