Because Devadatta does not possess the nature of walking, it is not only that he does not walk, but also in order to include other non-walkers such as mountains other than Devadatta, because they do not possess the nature of walking, they also do not walk. 'Does not walk' refers to the dharma to be proven. 'Because it does not possess the nature of walking' refers to the proving dharma. 'Like that other than it' refers to the analogy, for example, Devadatta is not a walker, and other mountains etc. other than that are not walkers, just as because they do not possess the nature of walking, they do not walk, Devadatta is not a walker, and also because he does not possess the nature of walking, he does not walk. Therefore, 'non-walker, non-walking,' what was said earlier, close to Devadatta, is the dharma of the proposition; 'non-walker, non-walking,' what was repeated later, close to the mountains etc., is the aspect of the proposition, close to the example of the similar dharma there, is close to the establishment. For the side of the atomists and one's own school, one should also say that, the atomists etc. and one's own school believe that things arise from the unarisen, they say: Previously, when the activity of walking has not arisen, one is not a walker, does not walk, later when the activity of walking has arisen, one is a walker, so one walks. For those people, one should also say the connecting words in that way, previously one was not a walker, later one also does not walk, because one does not possess the nature of walking, like that other than it, one should connect it appropriately. The Samkhyas should be refuted and examined for those who impose the fault of proving what is already established, which means that the Madhyamikas say 'non-walker, non-walking,' and the Samkhyas say that it is imposing the fault of proving what is already established, for those people, the Madhyamikas should refute and examine. How do the Samkhyas impose the fault of proving what is already established on the Madhyamikas? The Madhyamikas say 'non-walker, non-walking,' that refers to imposing the fault of proving what is already established, because we Samkhyas also believe that one who is not a walker does not walk.

Then, how should the Madhyamika refute and examine? Therefore, after saying, "What is the non-goer?" the Madhyamika should ask the Samkhyas: What is the "non-goer" that you say "the non-goer does not go"? After asking this, if the Samkhyas say, "Where is it? It is the non-manifestation of going," if they say that, then after asking this, if the Samkhyas say, "The so-called non-goer is the non-manifestation of the activity of going, therefore it does not go, and this is also established in our treatises. The Madhyamika argues that it does not go, and commits the fault of arguing for what is already established. We Samkhyas believe that for a goer, if the activity of going was not manifest before, and later becomes manifest, then it is going," if they say that. If they say that, then the Madhyamika should refute and examine them in this way: They should state the harm of the inference as stated before, and refute them by stating the harm of the inference that refutes manifestation. And what is that? Non-manifestation of going will not manifest, because of non-manifestation. For example, like a flower in the sky, they should state the refutation of manifestation as stated before. If it is said to be the state before the goer, then the Samkhyas do not accept the harm of the inference as stated before, if they say, "The so-called non-goer is the state before the goer, therefore it does not go, and this is also established in our treatises. The Madhyamika argues that it does not go, and commits the fault of arguing for what is already established. We Samkhyas believe that in the state before the goer, it is not a goer, and later becomes a goer, then it is going," if they say that. If they say that, then the Madhyamika should refute and examine them in this way: It will harm their own inference, they say. If the Samkhyas say that in the state before the goer, it is not a goer, and later becomes a goer, then it is going, then saying so commits the fault of harming their own inference.
