This, called "for the sake of generating certainty," is the dharma to be established. Because that place possesses a going that is other than the nature of Devadatta, therefore, in order to generate the mind's certainty of the conceptualization that "Devadatta possesses going" in that place, it establishes that there is a going that is other than substance. For example, like the object of the mind that "Devadatta possesses a stick," this should be connected as an example. For example, wherever there is the mind that "Devadatta possesses a stick," it is because certainty arises in that place that "the stick is other than the nature of Devadatta." That mind is the object of the substance that exists as a going other than Devadatta. Similarly, wherever there is the mind that "Devadatta possesses going," it is also because certainty arises in that place that "the going is other than the nature of Devadatta," that mind is the object of the substance that exists as a going other than Devadatta. Therefore, since the going other than substance is established, if we, the Ulūka school, want to accept it according to the later examination, then it is contradictory to the meaning of the reason. Therefore, the meaning of the former reason is not unestablished. Having said this, they say that it is not unreasonable. In order to answer that saying, here the commentator himself says: Among them, here, if Devadatta possesses any distinction, etc. Among them, the word "here" is to indicate the refutation by the commentator here of what the Ulūka school previously said, that the meaning of the word "going" has become something else. If Devadatta possesses any distinction, that is, if Devadatta possesses any other distinction that is not going. If it shows that the object of the mind itself possesses a meaning of the word that is other than the nature of Devadatta, then it is if the Ulūka school shows that the object of the mind that "Devadatta possesses going" itself possesses a meaning of the word that is other than the nature of Devadatta. That is to establish something that is established in convention. If the opponent says this, like that, the object of the mind itself is Devadatta.

If it is shown to have a meaning of words different from itself, how does it become an argument for what is already established? To show this, like saying "Devadatta," for the aggregates of skandhas that have the characteristic of being born in another place, because the wisdom of "having walking here" is acknowledged, it is said like this. The word "like this" means "because of what." "Devadatta" refers to the one who has the name "Devadatta." "Aggregates of skandhas" refers to the collection of limbs, etc., that are gathered together. "In another place" refers to from one place to any other place. "Being born in that other place" refers to appearing in that other place. "For the difference of the characteristic of that birth" refers to Devadatta, that is, for the aggregates of skandhas that have the characteristic of being born in another place. "Because the wisdom of having walking here is acknowledged" refers to because we also conventionally acknowledge the wisdom of "this Devadatta has walking," so is the argument you make an argument for what is already established? If the word "Devadatta walking" has a meaning of words, then this shows that: the object of wisdom, Devadatta, does not have any other difference, but has the meaning of words of the characteristic of walking, this is the final conclusion. If that is the case, it will become without an example, because the example will become without the thing to be proven, just like the object of the wisdom of your example "Devadatta has a stick," that object itself does not have walking, because it is just like having a stick itself. If in another way, like you say, even if it has any general difference, it can still establish walking, that is also not possible. If that is the case, not only will the fault of the example becoming without the thing to be proven arise, but it will also become contradictory to the meaning of the reason. How is it contradictory? Therefore, even in convention it is contradictory in meaning, then in ultimate truth, what more needs to be said?
