. In order to indicate the previously established tenet. It is said, "Here, there appears a contradictory side to the meaning of the topic," etc. "Here" refers to the treatises of the Middle Way. The meaning of the topic refers to the meaning of what was previously vowed, established, and to be established, which is that all phenomena are unborn. Saying "There appears a contradictory side to that meaning" means that there exists an opposing side to the meaning of unbornness, which is the appearance of those who claim that all phenomena are born. What is the contradictory side? Therefore, it is said, "Internal phenomena are only born, because they make names related to their objects," etc. Thus declared, even though unbornness has already been established through scripture and reasoning, those who claim birth still refute by saying that all phenomena are only born, which is a contradictory side to the meaning of the topic. Here, "internal phenomena" is the subject, which is the internal sense bases such as the eye. "Only born" is the property to be established, which is that internal phenomena are only unborn in the ultimate sense, which is what is to be established. "Because they make names related to their objects" is the property that establishes. "Their objects" refers to the objects of the internal sense bases such as the eye, which are the objects and perceptions such as forms. Saying "related to their objects" means distinguished by them, that is, related to them, and possessing the function of the aggregates of body, head, neck, lips, hands, feet, etc. Saying "make their names" refers to making the names of the aggregates such as the body, for example, "Devadatta goes, comes, stays, eats," etc. Therefore, connect it with "internal phenomena are only born." To this, whatever is not born does not make names related to their objects, which is the opposite. For example, a barren woman's son does not go.

That which is not like that is called a dissimilar example. That Deva-given and All-pervading Friend do not walk like that is called a similar example. For example, Deva-given and All-pervading Friend, because of the aggregates of body, head, neck, mouth, hands, feet, etc., have the designation of walking, etc., just as those are only men. Likewise, the internal objects such as the eyes also, because of the aggregates of body, head, neck, mouth, hands, feet, etc., which possess those objects, have the designation of walking, etc. Those are also only men, and should be combined in this way. Therefore, the internal objects are only born, which is the result and conclusion of valid cognition. In order to refute the previously established thesis. Here, the commentator himself says, in order to eliminate the previously established thesis, these and so on are said. The previously established thesis refers to the thesis that was previously skillfully combined and established, and what is that? The internal objects are only born, because they have the designation of those objects. In this case, whatever is not born does not have the designation of those objects. For example, just as the son of a barren woman does not walk. Because Deva-given and All-pervading Friend do not walk like that, it is said that the internal objects are only born. In order to eliminate the previously established thesis, it means in order to refute it. Saying these means that the commentator himself explained the following reasoning. If giving, discipline, and meditation, etc., become the birth of accomplishment, and walking and coming are famous in the world, then accomplishment is the accomplishment of what is already accomplished. Regarding this, giving, discipline, and meditation, etc., indicate this: which of patience, diligence, and wisdom. Those that were first mentioned as giving, discipline, and meditation are giving, discipline, and meditation, etc.

Generosity, discipline, and patience are the accumulations of merit, while concentration and wisdom are the accumulations of knowledge. Diligence goes both ways, indicating both the accumulations of merit and knowledge. "That which is accomplished by them" means that which becomes the cause of accumulation. What are those? Therefore, it is said that birth, going, and coming, etc. Why are those the accomplishers of the accumulations of merit and knowledge? Like this, the sky lotus and so forth, which have no birth, going, and coming, will not become the accomplishers of the accumulations of merit and knowledge, etc. But the giver, the object, and the receiver, etc., who have birth, going, and coming, can properly connect generosity and so forth to the perfections. If one argues for birth, going, and coming, which are known in the world, then it is arguing for what is already established. Birth and so forth are known in the world, even to the cowherd's wife. If you argue conventionally, then you will incur the fault of arguing for what is already established, which is not permissible. However, if in the ultimate truth, a yogi, abiding in equipoise, with the eye of wisdom seeing things as they truly are, argues that birth, going, and coming exist, then because they are the basis for making designations that accord with their respective objects, the meaning of the reason is not established. "Yogi in equipoise" is a synonym for a yogi who is definitely abiding in the ultimate truth. "Seeing things as they truly are with the eye of wisdom" is a synonym for without an object of focus. Like this, seeing things as they truly are is because it is seen through the mode of without an object of focus. If you, relying on the yogi's realization, argue that birth, going, and coming exist in the ultimate truth, then because they are the basis for making designations that accord with their respective objects, the meaning of the reason is not established. That is to say, if you argue in that way, then birth and so forth are not established in the ultimate truth.
