If it is said that the production of the effect is shown by being endowed with activity, then it is not accepted that it is not manifestly directed towards the production of the effect, therefore, the meaning of the reason is not established. The word "this" here refers to the near. The phrase "the causes are endowed with activity" means to establish that causes such as the eye are endowed with activity. The phrase "by producing the effect" means that in conventional truth, the production of the effect called eye consciousness is the production of the effect. The phrase "shows if" means that the production of the effect shows the establishment, that is, seeing the production of the effect, one can infer that the causes are endowed with activity. The phrase "it is not accepted that it is not manifestly directed towards the production of the effect" indicates the following: the establishment that the causes are endowed with activity is shown and established by the production of the effect, but as long as it is not manifestly directed towards the production of the effect, the causes such as the eye do not have activity. Because the causes are not accepted as being endowed with activity. The phrase "therefore, the meaning of the reason is not established" means that according to the reason stated above, in the view of those who assert production, the eye and so on are only the cause of producing eye consciousness, because they are endowed with activity, just as seeds, soil, water, fire, wind, and so on produce sprouts. Therefore, the previously stated inference will be harmed by the later argument, and the meaning of the stated reason, "because it is endowed with activity," is not established, just as sound is not bound by name, the causes are also not endowed with activity, therefore, the meaning of your argument is also not established, and my previously stated inference will not be harmed by your later argument. The Sutra masters say: Only at the time of producing the effect, the causes have activity,

The so-called "my later inference is also not without harm," here the Sautrāntikas say: You Madhyamikas think that for those causes that do not obviously tend to produce an effect, because they do not have the nature of having a function, therefore the thesis itself is not established. If someone admits this, then this fault will fall on him. But we believe that only at the time of the effect's arising, the cause has a function, and the objects existing in the realm and the realm-possessor help each other. Therefore, only at the time when the effect arises, the causes such as the eye have the nature of having a function, and because it is admitted as a cause, the thesis of us Sautrāntikas, that is, the nature of having a function, is also not unestablished. Because, at that time, the causes all have the nature of having a function. Therefore, your previously stated inference, my later inference is also not without harm. Thus, my thesis, the eye etc. only produce eye consciousness, because they have a function, just as seeds, land, water, fire, wind etc. produce sprouts, so there is no harm, therefore birth is established. They say so. In order to answer what they said, the teacher says here: Because it arises depending on these, therefore these are called causes. And so on. This verse refutes the previous view of the Sautrāntikas. The so-called "depending on these grains etc." refers to depending and existing on the causes such as seeds, land, water, fire, wind etc. The so-called "because the effect arises" refers to the effect, that is, the so-called sprout arises and appears. The so-called "therefore you think these grains etc. are the ultimate cause" refers to the fact that because the effect arises depending on these grains etc., therefore you Sautrāntikas think these grains etc. are the ultimate cause, which is revealing the Sautrāntikas' own treatises. Finished.

The usage of the word "ga" indicates that the teacher does not accept the view here. This is an expression used by the teacher Nagarjuna himself to show his disapproval. The words "zhag," "lo," and "je'o" have the meaning of obtaining the wishes of others. Therefore, (verse) "If it does not arise, it does not arise, how can these not be non-causes?" Thus it is said. How can the fruit not be a non-cause of seeds, etc.? Because the fruit arises depending on causes such as seeds, you believe that seeds, etc., are the ultimate causes. Therefore, when causes, fruits, sprouts, etc., do not arise, how can seeds, etc., not be non-causes? They will become non-causes, so it is believed that ultimately they will not produce fruit. Therefore, the meaning of the words "these have no cause" is spoken. When the fruit does not arise, seeds, etc., have no cause, this is a summary word. In order to clarify that meaning, in order to show the famous source and example in the world, it is said, "For example, if one does not read, one is not wise, how can it not be the same?" For example, if you yourself do not generate actions through the power of knowledge such as learning, then you will become a foolish person, not a wise person. Similarly, here, if causes such as seeds do not produce fruit sprouts, then they will become non-causes, so they have no cause. If someone says that we do not admit that the cause before the fruit arises is a cause, so there is no obstacle. If the Sautrantika says this, the Madhyamika will say: Thus (verse) "If it does not arise, it does not arise, how can these not be non-causes?" When the fruit does not arise, seeds, etc.
