Non-existence, mutual non-existence, and complete non-existence – these discriminations are unreasonable. The statement that "there is no fault in what is said" is incorrect because the example of a rabbit's horn is empty in terms of both the probandum and the probans. The fact that seeds and other things have function is not established. If the Samkhyas retort that the example of those who speak of prior origination is like the non-existence of a rabbit's horn, the Madhyamikas refute that, in ultimate truth, the non-existence of a rabbit's horn itself is not established. Here, the Samkhyas assert that the non-existence of a rabbit's horn in ultimate truth is merely a real entity and use it as an example. Their conclusion is this: the three qualities of sattva (藏文:སྙིང་སྟོབས།,梵文天城体:सत्त्व,梵文罗马拟音:sattva,汉语字面意思:sattva), rajas (藏文:རྡུལ།,梵文天城体:रजस्,梵文罗马拟音:rajas,汉语字面意思:rajas), and tamas (藏文:མུན་པ།,梵文天城体:तमस्,梵文罗马拟音:tamas,汉语字面意思:tamas), which depend on sound and so forth, are obscured by time and space for eons and are not visible. However, when they are completely transformed into the form of a buffalo, the horn itself becomes visible. Therefore, the non-existence of a rabbit's horn is merely a real entity, so the example is established. Therefore, to explain that "the non-existence of a rabbit's horn is merely a real entity," and "because it is the basis of distinction, like form and a blue lotus," these words were spoken. Here, "the non-existence of a rabbit's horn" is the subject, and "merely a real entity" is the property to be established. To explain this, it is said, "because it is the property to be established, like form." "Because it is the basis of distinction" is also the property to be established, and "like a blue lotus" is also an example. For example, to explain that form is merely a real entity, for example, to explain the whiteness itself of form, or the grossness itself of form. The whiteness itself of form and the grossness itself of form are merely real entities, and similarly for the non-existence of a rabbit's horn. To explain this, it is said, "merely a real entity, the non-existence of a rabbit's horn is." To explain that the non-existence of a rabbit's horn is also a real entity.

May it transform! Furthermore, for example, the blue lotus is the basis of characteristics, and the qualities of blue, etc., are its characteristics. Because the substance of the basis of characteristics is called the blue lotus, it is itself an existing thing. Similarly, the rabbit's horn is also the basis of characteristics, and the qualities of sharpness, etc., are its characteristics. Therefore, the substance of the basis of characteristics, called the rabbit's horn, is also an existing thing. Thus, the rabbit's horn is truly an existing thing in the ultimate sense. Therefore, since the example of the rabbit's horn is established, the example of grains, etc., which truly possess function, is also established. Since this is established, it is also established that the eyes, etc., are merely the cause of generating eye consciousness, they say. In order to answer what they say, the commentary here explains, saying, "That is not good," etc. What is called "That is not good" means that your two arguments are not proving that the rabbit's horn exists. Why? Because, the existence of both form and the blue lotus in the ultimate sense, and the basis of characteristics itself, are not established, so the example is incomplete. Thus, it is shown: For me, the existence to be proven of either form or the blue lotus in the ultimate sense is not established, and the proof of the basis of characteristics itself is not established. Therefore, you will incur the fault of the dharma of the example not being established, so that is not good. If you say: Just as we cannot prove to you that form, etc., exist, similarly, you cannot prove to us that form, etc., do not exist, so the faults are the same. This is shown as follows: If the Samkhyas say this, we Samkhyas cannot prove to you Madhyamikas that form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness exist in the ultimate sense as substance, things, and basis. Similarly, you Madhyamikas cannot prove to us Samkhyas that form, etc., do not exist in the ultimate sense, so the faults are the same. In order to answer what they say, the commentary here explains.
