If so, whatever does not possess causes and conditions, because it does not exist itself, the action that does not possess causes and conditions does not exist. Like this, you have denied the existence of this action, therefore you have admitted that the action does not possess causes and conditions. Some say that doing so is to refute the exposition of Master Guṇamati by means of explanation. Master Guṇamati said that the action of generating consciousness is non-existent like consciousness, this statement is unreasonable. Why? Because in this way, the causes help each other, so in the immediately following moment, the action of being able to generate the fruit, with the moment of obtaining self-nature, the arising of things is considered as arising, because the nominal is not abandoned, so it is not non-existent. Why is the statement that the action of generating consciousness is non-existent like consciousness unreasonable? The Madhyamikas believe that the action of generating consciousness can generate things, therefore generating is considered to be admitted in the ultimate truth, and it is not abandoned, so it is not non-existent. Master Guṇamati did not distinguish that the action exists in the conventional truth and does not exist in the ultimate truth, but generally said that it does not exist, therefore it is unreasonable. It is explained in this way that Master Guṇamati did not say that in the ultimate truth the action is not generating, but in this way, because the action is only prevented without distinction, it is unreasonable. Then what should it be like? In the nominal of the conventional truth, the action of the aggregation of causes and conditions, with the moment of obtaining self-nature, the arising of things is considered as arising, it is not non-existent, therefore the causes help each other, so in the immediately following moment, the action of being able to generate the fruit, with the moment of obtaining self-nature, the arising of things is considered as arising, because the nominal is not abandoned, so it is not non-existent. When the causes and conditions, such as eye and form, light and space, attention, etc., the objects and object-possessors exist in this way, at that time, the eye sees the form, therefore the eye helps the form, and the form is also in front of the eye, therefore the form also helps the eye.

Similarly, appearance also benefits the eye and form, and so on. The sky also benefits them, and attention also benefits them. Thus, the moment of benefiting that is capable of producing a result in the immediate moment is the moment of attaining the self of the action. If one wants the object of consciousness to arise from the action, then when it arises, it is accepted as a conventional term and not abandoned. Therefore, since the action is not non-existent in the conventional term, why explain that the action of generating consciousness is non-existent like consciousness, which is not permissible. The teacher Guṇamati's explanation that even the cause of meaning that possesses non-existence is unreasonable is also unreasonable. Why? Because it is said that the cause of meaning that possesses is not unreasonable. If there is an action of cooking and an action of producing in the conventional sense, then the cause of meaning that possesses is not unreasonable. For example, if a woman exists in the conventional sense, then she possesses form and can be called a woman with form. If Devadatta exists, then he possesses wealth and can be called a wealthy person. Similarly, if an action exists in the conventional sense, then the cause of meaning that possesses the cause is also not unreasonable. This is, for the time being, a refutation of the first aspect of the explanation of the Elder Guṇamati. Now, the second aspect of the explanation of the teacher Guṇamati is that the action of generating the consciousness of others, which is not transformed into the nature of consciousness, is established by its own nature and, not possessing causes, produces its own result. What he said, and the explanation of the teacher Guṇamati that it does not possess causes, therefore it is non-existent, is also unreasonable. Why? Because it is said that by merely making a pledge, one refutes the position of others. Since both the former and latter statements lack reason and example, both are merely words of pledge, and by mere words, the desired meaning is not accomplished here. That is not that mo.
