"Earth Element" or "Called Earth Element" is like this: Furthermore, some Dharmalakṣaṇa say: "The nature of the sense bases, neither subtle nor coarse, because the conditions have no other entity, that is true. However, those things that are born later from the bright things such as the eyes, etc., are placed in the heart, and relying on it, the conditions will change." If they say so. "Because it possesses otherness, it is established as the earth element" is like this: The Vaiśeṣikas also say this: "Even without the eyes, etc., because it possesses the quality called 'otherness,' the conditions will also change." If they establish it like this. "Because it possesses the quality called 'otherness'" is like this: In the Vaiśeṣika's tenets, there are six meanings of words, and from the qualities, because it possesses the quality called 'other.' So, what are the six meanings of words that appear in the Vaiśeṣika's tenets? Substance, quality, action, generality, particularity, and inherence. Among them, what is substance? There are nine kinds, namely earth, water, fire, wind, space, time, direction, self, and mind. What is quality? There are twenty-four kinds, namely form, sound, smell, taste, touch, number, magnitude, separateness, conjunction, disjunction, otherness and non-otherness, eye consciousness, ear consciousness, nose consciousness, tongue consciousness, body consciousness, pleasure, suffering, desire, hatred, dharma, non-dharma, karmic force, and effort. What is action? There are five kinds, namely lifting, lowering, contracting, extending, and moving. What is generality? It is existence, namely great generality and small generality. What is particularity? It is distinguishing from that. What is inherence? It is inhering in this and this. Thus, from the Vaiśeṣika's six meanings of words, from the twenty-four qualities, because it possesses the quality called 'other,' the conditions will also change into otherness, if they establish it like this. This is merely a designation, because there is no other nature from those, this is shown like this: Thus, the nature of the sense bases from the conditions...

Having placed the desire to arise in the heart. If, relying on this, one considers the conditions to be other, and because of possessing the quality called "self-nature," one considers the conditions to be other, then, their otherness is produced by dependence, and is not existent by its own nature, so it is merely a verbal expression. What is called self-nature is that which does not depend on anything, like the heat of fire. Therefore, if the sense-fields do not depend on those that are later desired to arise, and the conditions have otherness without depending on the quality called "otherness," then those conditions could be considered to be other by their own nature. Since those conditions do not have the entity of otherness by their own nature, therefore it is not permissible to consider the conditions to have the entity of otherness. The saying, "Do not be attached to this," means that one should not be attached to this side that considers the conditions to have the entity of otherness. If here the opponent says: You have already admitted in name that the conditions are otherness, therefore the conditions are established as otherness, so arising from other is also established. In order to answer this previous view raised from the opponent's mouth, here it is explained: Even if otherness already exists in name, it has been previously shown that there is no arising from other in ultimate reality. It has been shown thus: Like me, even if in conventional truth the sense-fields and the conditions already exist as otherness to each other, in ultimate reality, the sense-fields such as the eye do not arise from those conditions, it has been previously shown in the context of establishing no arising from other. In ultimate reality, the internal sense-fields do not arise from those other conditions, because they are other, like a pot. Or, in ultimate reality, those that want to express otherness, those that establish the internal sense-fields such as the eye, are definitely not conditions, because they are other, like braids of hair and so on. This is what is to be explained. The Samkhyas refute, saying: The self-nature of things exists only in the conditions as the self-nature of minute parts, and it is also promised that it will be revealed later. Even if the result has not been revealed,
