Because wind arises from earth, touch is merely nature; because touch arises merely from pride, touch is also merely change. Because form does not arise merely from that, form is merely nature; because form arises merely from pride, form is also merely change. Because water arises from taste alone, taste is merely nature; because taste arises merely from pride, taste is also merely change. Because earth arises from smell alone, smell is merely nature; because smell arises merely from pride, smell is also merely change. Therefore, the five great elements and the eleven faculties, these sixteen are merely change, not nature. Among the eight, namely the chief, the great, pride, and the five 'thatness' (tanmatras), the chief is only nature, not change. Seven are both nature and change. These twenty-four, together with the purusha, are indeed twenty-five. Whoever knows these together with the purusha will be liberated, no matter in what manner they abide. As it is said: By knowing those twenty-five, whether with matted hair, or shaved head, or topknot, wherever one delights to dwell, one will be liberated; there is no doubt about this. So it is said. Those who assert nature as the cause, because others do not understand such a statement, those who assert nature as the cause say: The cause of the internal distinctions is definitely pleasure and delusion, because they are associated with it. Just as in the world, whatever is associated with something is known to be the cause of it, like sandalwood shavings, earthenware, vessels, ornaments, and so on. Here also, 'the internal distinctions' are the subject, and 'the cause is definitely pleasure, suffering, and delusion' is the property to be proven, i.e., the property to be proven. 'Because it is associated with it' is the means of proof. Just as in the world, whatever is associated with something, that is its cause.

This, called "knowing is," is the combination of its close association. For example, like sandalwood sap, tiles, vessels, and ornaments, this is called the combination of metaphor. The summarized meaning here is that the cause of the internal sources, such as the eye, and the various differences that have different characteristics from each other, are happiness, suffering, and ignorance, which can be determined to be courage, dust, and darkness, because they possess these three qualities of courage, dust, and darkness. For example, it is said that just as sandalwood sap, etc., is the cause of sandalwood, etc., because it possesses sandalwood, etc. Among them, "the various internal differences" refers to the internal sources, such as the eye, etc., which possess differences with different characteristics from each other. Happiness is called courage, as it is said: Joy and satisfaction and great joy, happiness and the nature of peace, sometimes also appear, those are the qualities of courage. Because it is said that way. Suffering is called dust, as it is said: Displeasure and complete torment, sorrow, desire, and intolerance, the reason for appearing in what place is that those are considered signs of dust. Because it is said that way. Ignorance is called darkness, as it is said: Confusion and likewise ignorance, carelessness, sleep, and distraction, sometimes do not appear, those are the qualities of darkness. Because it is said that way. "Because it possesses it" means that the various differences of the internal sources, such as the eye, etc., because they possess the qualities of courage, dust, and darkness, it is asserted that the cause of the internal sources is nature. In order to make the combination of its close association, like this, in the world, whatever is combined with whatever, it is its cause, because it is known that it is said that way. If asked, what manifests the cause of the various differences with different characteristics of the internal sources, such as the eye, etc., happiness, suffering, and ignorance? In order to show the combination of its close association, like this, it is said that way in the world, etc. The word "like this" is for what reason?

English

meaning. "Even in the world" means even in the realm of sentient beings. "Whatever" means any object. "What does it become endowed with" means what qualities does it become endowed with. "That is" means that object. "Knowing that it is the cause of that" means it is known to possess the cause of that quality. To show its example, it is said, "For example, sandalwood shavings, tiles, vessels, ornaments, and so on." For example, even sandalwood shavings, because they possess the nature of sandalwood, those are the cause of sandalwood; Khampa tiles, because they possess the nature of Khampa, those are also the cause of Khampa; Khaar vessels, etc., because they possess the nature of Khaar, those are also the cause of Khaar; bracelets and armlets, etc., gold ornaments, because they possess the nature of gold, those are also known to be the cause of gold, and so on. That is to conclude the meaning with an example, therefore, similarly, the inner distinctions also possess happiness, suffering, and ignorance, therefore, according to the reasons stated above, the cause of the inner distinctions is happiness, suffering, and ignorance. This is the principle of following. The other four principles, namely the principle of measure, the principle of cause and effect, the principle of the function of power, and the principle of various natures, are not written here. By distinguishing these five principles and five non-principles, it is always proven that the inner distinctions have five causes. If Buddhists say to me that the aggregates are not established as having the qualities of courage, dust, and darkness, so your reason is not established. Therefore, the Samkhyas establish their own doubts. Because any unestablished or doubtful word also has the characteristic of depending on establishment, therefore, form, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness.
