They say that the self itself is the cause of the birth of all beings. In order to answer what they say, here it is explained through commentary. The refutation made here should be done in the same way as those who consider Īśvara as the cause. Saying this shows the refutation that things are not born from the self. Among them, 'here' refers to this occasion of refuting those who consider the self as the cause. 'Refutation' refers to the refutation that things are not born from the self. 'Like those who consider Īśvara as the cause' means that here, the refutation of those who consider the self as the cause should also be combined in the same way as the refutation of those who consider Īśvara as the cause was previously shown. Therefore, it is shown in this way: that is merely a vow. The self cannot be the cause of the birth of all beings even in the mundane, because it is the cause of happiness and complete suffering for some, like a cowherd. Or, beings must not be associated with just one being called the self, because it is measurable. For example, like the self, therefore even in the mundane, things are not born from it. Even if the self is the cause, if it becomes the nature of the master of the result, or becomes other, or becomes both, no matter which one is recognized, since the refutation has been said before, and it will also prevent the arising of existence and non-existence, therefore, in the ultimate truth, things are not born from the self. If it is said that what is called the self is the cause of sentient beings and the various worlds that are considered as containers, because it produces existence, arising, destruction, happiness, suffering, upward growth, and downward decline, then, in terms of convention, this is proof of what has already been established. But it is not so in the ultimate truth, because in the ultimate truth, even the arising of karma has not been accepted. It should be said like this. Through 'it should also be said' etc., here, the refutation of those who consider the self as the cause is not only like those who consider Īśvara as the cause, but other additional valid cognitions should also be combined.

For what reason? For example, "like the self of offering" and so on. Here, "the self of Devadatta" and so on, this is the subject; "the cause of Devadatta's body and senses is not" and so on, this is the property to be established; "because it is a self" and so on, this is the establishing property; for example, "like the self of offering" and so on, this is the example, which should be connected. Among them, "the self of Devadatta" and so on, refers to the nature of the person possessed by Devadatta, that is, having awareness. "The cause of Devadatta's body and senses is not" and so on, is to establish that the self of Devadatta is not the cause of Devadatta's body, nor is it the cause of Devadatta's senses. "Because it is a self" and so on, means that although there is a self, it is not the cause of Devadatta's body and senses. For example, "like the self of offering" and so on, for example, in the conventional sense, the self of offering is considered to be the cause of the offering's own body and senses, but it is not considered to be the cause of Devadatta's body and senses, similarly, the self of Devadatta is also not the cause of Devadatta's body and senses, this is its meaning. Or, the agent of the collection of the offering's body and senses is not the self of offering, because it is the cause of the arising of happiness, suffering, and knowledge, for example, "like the collection of Devadatta's body and senses" and so on, this is also a kind of valid cognition. Here, "of the collection of the offering's body and senses" and so on, this is the subject; "the agent is not the self of offering" and so on, this is the property to be established; "because it is the cause of the arising of happiness, suffering, and knowledge" and so on, this is the establishing property; for example, "like the collection of Devadatta's body and senses" and so on, this is the example, which should be connected. Among them, "of the collection of the offering's body and senses" and so on, refers to the collection of the offering's body, that is, all limbs and those with limbs, and the collection of the offering's senses, that is, all colored senses such as the eye.

The phrase "not the sacrificer's self" means that it needs to be proven that the cause of the arising of the sacrificer's body aggregate and sense faculty aggregate is not the sacrificer's self. The phrase "because it is the cause of arising pleasure, suffering, and consciousness" means that the sacrificer's body and sense faculty aggregate, because it is the cause of arising pleasure, because it is the cause of arising suffering, and because it is the cause of arising consciousness, therefore their agent is not the sacrificer's self. To this, When the sacrificer's body and sense faculty aggregate performs meritorious deeds, they are the cause of arising pleasure; when the sacrificer's body and sense faculty aggregate performs non-meritorious deeds, they are the cause of arising suffering; when the sacrificer's body and sense faculty aggregate studies treatises, they are the cause of arising consciousness. The phrase "like the body and sense faculty aggregate of Devadatta" means that, like the body and sense faculty aggregate of Devadatta, because it is the cause of arising pleasure, suffering, and consciousness, therefore their agent is not the sacrificer's self, the sacrificer's body and sense faculty aggregate is also the cause of arising pleasure, suffering, and consciousness, therefore their agent is also not the sacrificer's self, this is the concluding remark. Alternatively, the bound self is not the cause of all lands, because it is a self, like the liberated self, revealing the nature of dharma would become a fault of self-contradiction, this is also a kind of valid cognition. Here, the phrase "the bound self" is the subject; the phrase "not the cause of all lands" is the property to be proven; the phrase "because it is a self" is the proving property; the phrase "like the liberated self" is the example; the phrase "revealing the nature of dharma would become a fault of self-contradiction" should be combined as the result of valid cognition. To this, the phrase "the bound self" refers to the self bound by karma and afflictions, which is considered the cause of the three realms.
