, and it should be refuted that those are in that, and that that is not in those. Even the subtle particles are different because they are divided into six parts by the difference of directions. The parts are also different because they are divided into six parts by the difference of directions, and it should be refuted that that is the same as this, and this is the same as that, and those are in that, and that that is not in those. Thus, it should be understood that the nature of things is not completely established. Furthermore, by the reason that "things themselves are unborn," the cause does not separately produce the effect, because even if there is a cause, the effect does not arise. The conditions are also not producers, because without a cause, they cannot produce an effect. The collection of causes and conditions is also not a producer, because there is nothing called a fruit, sprout, or person in them. Therefore, in the conventional sense, it is seen that things arise from the nature that appears as causes and conditions, but there is no intrinsic nature, just like an illusory elephant. For example, an illusory elephant is the cause and condition accomplished by the mind of a magician, grass, flowers, medicine, peacock feathers, etc., and it appears as an elephant, but there is no true nature of an elephant in it. Although the elephant is empty of a true nature, the form of the elephant appears. Those who know illusion do not fixate on a nature in it. Similarly, all external and internal things are produced by the collection of causes and conditions, and can be fixated on as a false nature, but apart from what appears as causes and conditions, there is not even a tiny part of a subtle particle in things. It is said: "Subhuti, from where does one abide and cause sentient beings to manifestly perform various actions, there is not even a part of the tip of a sound." And similarly: No thing is unborn, the existent is not born, the non-existent is not born. The conditions are merely temporary, appearing as arising and ceasing. Thus it is said. In order to show that meaning, another verse is used to connect the two valid cognitions, things...

Not seeing things as having self-nature, because conventionally they arise from causes, like illusions, or because they possess causes with functions, like illusory elephants. This means that things do not have self-nature, because in conventional truth, they arise from the nature of causes and conditions, like an illusory elephant. Or, because they possess causes capable of producing specifically determined results, like an illusory elephant. Here it is said: By proving non-arising, you negate existence, therefore you admit non-existence and also prove nihilism. The reply is: If by the manner of my proving, the existence of things were negated, thereby proving the nature of non-existence, then it would indeed be so. But because I wish to realize the wisdom that guides the Middle Way by abandoning both extremes, therefore I also negate non-existence. The thought that things do not exist is not in accordance with reality, because it is established through conception, like the thought of a person in a tree at a distance. This means that the thought that things do not exist is false in ultimate truth. Why? Because it is established through conception, like the thought of mistaking a tree or stone for a person in the dark or at a distance. Or, a non-veridical mind considers the object to be apprehended as wrong, because it is the object of conceptual knowledge, like the thought of water in a mirage. This means that the nature of the object apprehended by a non-veridical mind is wrong, not true, because it is the object of a conceptual consciousness that does not accord with the way things are. For example, although one may perceive water in a mirage, it is not actually water. Some say this: Things are not a single existence, because the moment of the cause ceases; nor are they a single non-existence, because the moment of the effect arises. Their thought is also merely the nature of existence and non-existence. Therefore, for those people, I say this: Because what is to be understood by the consciousness of existence and non-existence is obscured, so too is the non-conceptual wisdom of the wise.
