The Blaze of Reasoning, a Commentary on the Heart of the Middle Way. The Blaze of Reasoning, a Commentary on the Heart of the Middle Way. In Sanskrit: Madhyamakahṛdayavṛttitarkājvāli. In Tibetan: The Blaze of Reasoning, a Commentary on the Heart of the Middle Way. Volume One. Homage to the All-Knowing One. Here, one first pays homage to one's own desired deity, because the treatises that closely demonstrate this become the conditions for a heroic individual, are without obstacles, and are endowed with fruit. Therefore, the author of the treatise says at the beginning of the treatise: That which is not thoroughly conceptualized, is not an object of consciousness, nor a basis, is not expressible, not examinable, not knowable, is without arising and ceasing, and is bliss, is not conceptualized, without appearance, without characteristics, and without a clarifier, is not two, not without two, and not not, is peaceful, the entry of wisdom is completely abandoned, that which is without letters is shown by letters, is revealed by compassion itself, the unerring teacher speaks thus, to that one I respectfully pay homage. Thus, the teacher is praised by showing his unique qualities. Although the word "that which" is general, it should be associated only with the Bhagavan because it shows that very thing without error. Although the qualities have been shown, if the name of the basis of the qualities is not shown, it will not be understood, therefore it is said "that very thing," that very thing of worldly and transworldly things, that is, the synonyms of suchness, the realm of dharma, and emptiness. "Not thoroughly conceptualized" means that it is not to be thoroughly conceptualized by the knowledge that infers the appearance of a hidden meaning with a generality, or it is not the object of coarse and subtle investigation, whether it occurs simultaneously or sequentially. "Not an object of consciousness" means that it is not to be known by the five consciousnesses that engage in the five kinds of objects of knowledge, or because it cannot be realized by children, non-Buddhists, trainees, non-trainees, and all solitary Buddhas. "Not a basis" means like the alaya-consciousness...

Just as there is a basis for all seeds of thought, and as there is a basis for individuals liberated from self, is there anything here that is a basis and universally connected? In no place whatsoever is there any basis or universal connection of this. The term "unrepresentable" means that this is not to be represented by its own characteristics or by general characteristics, does it? Does this not represent anything at all? The term "unthinkable" means that since all phenomena are not fully established in their own nature, one cannot think of "this" and "that." The term "unknowable" means that with the self-arisen wisdom, in a single instant, all phenomena are manifestly realized without error in all their aspects, and it is to be known in a way that is without knowing. The term "without arising or ceasing" means that arising is coming into being, and ceasing is cessation or destruction; these two are not present in this. The term "bliss" means that it is free from all harm such as birth. The term "non-conceptualization" means that it does not conceptualize the apprehended, the apprehender, one's own things, other's things, and non-things. The term "without appearance" means that it does not appear as self or other. The term "without characteristics" means that it is free from the characteristics of form and formlessness. The term "without explanation" means that it is free from explanations such as arising, abiding, ceasing, and change. The term "neither two nor not two" means that dualistic grasping and non-dualistic grasping, and dualistic grasping and non-dualistic grasping are of equal nature. The term "peaceful" means that it is to be realized by peaceful wisdom, or because it is the cause of supreme and unsurpassed peace. The term "abandoning the activity of the mind" means that it is the object of the wisdom that accords with the realization of ultimate truth, entering in a way that is without activity, and therefore it abandons the activity of the mind that is with characteristics and with objects. The term "without letters" means that it is not an object of the mind, nor is it an object of words, therefore without letters it is inexpressible. The term "by letters" means that it is imputed by letters. The term "by compassion itself" means
