When the sun rises and the owl opens its eyes, it is as if light does not appear. Similarly, when the sun of wisdom of a truly wise person destroys the seeds of ignorance and habit, the mind and mental factors do not see the object. These two verses reveal the above meaning. *Commentary on the Heart of the Middle Way: Blaze of Reasoning*, Volume Ten. If one were to think: Those with cataracts who have clear eyes, those who awaken from sleep, and those who are in darkness and encounter light, having become free from delusion, will see the nature of things such as form. However, when the yogi generates the knowledge of wisdom, they see nothing at all, so the analogy and meaning do not match, and therefore the analogy does not establish the meaning. In response to this, it is explained: Because seeing is not completely established in this case, it is posited as seeing non-seeing. Although it has already been explained, it should be further explained: Things are not seen as having self-nature, because the self-nature of things is not established. Or, things are unborn, like an illusionary elephant. This shows that wise people, in the conventional realm, do not add or subtract from the self-nature of things such as form, as they are mentally discriminated, but observe with wisdom that is in accordance with the world. Therefore, it is not that they see nothing at all, but they see the absence of self-nature. In the ultimate sense, things are not seen as having self-nature, because the self-nature of things is not established, like an illusionary elephant. Here, the mind and mental factors do not remain for more than a moment. Even that moment enters into an extremely subtle state due to the distinction between the beginning, middle, and end, thus abandoning its own nature, and therefore it is necessarily not established. So, for the time being, the self-nature of the mind and mental factors is not established. As it is said in the *Sutra Requested by Good Arm*: "This world does not exist for more than a moment, and even that moment has a time of arising, a time of abiding, and a time of ceasing." And so on. Similarly, all colored things, whether internal or external, such as the body and sprouts, are composed of earth, water, fire, wind, form, smell, taste, and so on.

That which is called "touch" is entirely composed of eight substances. For it, the body and sprouts are not earth, nor are they different from earth. There is no earth in these two, nor are these two in the earth. The same applies to the other seven. Earth and water, etc., are also of the nature of being composed of eight substances. For it, form is not earth itself, nor is earth different from form. There is no earth in form, nor is there form in earth, because there is no abiding in the nature of being a base and a thing based upon. Likewise, for each subsequent thing, there is no individual nature for each. Similarly, the three elements are also not earth, because their nature and function are different. Earth is also not different from the three elements, because without them, earth cannot be specifically identified. If earth could be established apart from the three elements, then it would follow that earth resides in the three elements, or the three elements reside in earth. Without the three elements, there is no nature of earth, just as there is no firewood apart from fire. Fire is also merely focused on the general existence of the combination of the three elements, but fire itself has not even an atom of its own nature. If fire existed independently apart from the three elements, then it would be possible to identify fire even without firewood. Similarly, neither water nor wind has an independent nature. The nature of form also does not exist apart from smell, taste, and touch, and the nature of these also does not exist apart from each other. These are neither the same nor different. Form itself is not smell, taste, and touch, because their characteristics are different. It is also not different from these, nor are these in form, nor is form in these, because they are not different. From different things, form, etc., should be distinguished from earth, etc., and it should be negated that it is the same and different, that it exists in it, and that they exist in it. Form, etc., should also be mentally distinguished from each other, and it should be negated that it is the same and different, that it exists in it, and that they exist in it. Also, with a single thing, atoms should be distinguished from form, and it should be negated that it is the same and different.
