Because the meaning of "for what reason" does not arise from dissimilar kinds, it is inherently contradictory. Furthermore, the inner elements are also without consciousness, because they are objects such as earth, and because they are elements, like other elements. The meaning of "the inner elements are also without consciousness, because they are objects such as earth, and because they are elements, like other elements" is that because the nature of inner and outer elements is the same, the inner elements are of the nature of consciousness, while the outer elements are not of the nature of consciousness. For this, it is also necessary to explain what difference there is in the cause. Therefore, just as consciousness does not arise from the elements, the elements also do not arise from consciousness. Therefore, the mind before dwelling in the womb, another mind precedes it, should be known by the wise, because it is grasping, like that which follows. The meaning of "the mind before dwelling in the womb, another mind precedes it, should be known by the wise, because it is grasping, like that which follows" is that the consciousness before dwelling in the womb also arises from another consciousness that preceded it, which should be known by the wise, because it is grasping, like the continuum of consciousness after birth. Why? Even a chick, having been accustomed to it before, seeks food as soon as it is born, because it moves for the sake of food, like a ripened sense faculty. The meaning of "even a chick, having been accustomed to it before, seeks food as soon as it is born, because it moves for the sake of food, like a ripened sense faculty" is that therefore, it should also be understood that the consciousness before dwelling in the womb also arises from another consciousness that preceded it. If it had not been accustomed to food and so on in other previous existences, how could a chick, as soon as it is born, move for the sake of food with clear awareness without being urged by anyone? Thus, because it moves for the sake of food, just like a young, middle-aged, or old person with fully ripened sense faculties, it is evident that chicks have also been accustomed to it in other previous lives. If someone thinks that the reason "because it moves" is uncertain, because it moves, then is it that just as a magnet moves stones and so on, a chick also moves without having been accustomed to it before? Or, like a fully ripened sense faculty, is it because it has been accustomed to it before that it moves?

If it is thought that this is because of the uncertain pervasion, therefore it is said: The eye of a needle moves a stone, the reason is not uncertain. It is not unestablished, because it is seen eating food. This means that it is true that the eye of a needle can move stones, etc., but that is not for the sake of food. Therefore, because the reason is made specific as "moving for the sake of food," there is no fault as stated before. Those who have strong attachment to the view of denigrating the afterlife, what did they say is used to establish it? They said: The afterlife does not exist, because it is invisible, like a flower blooming in the sky. Regarding this, if it is thought that the reason "because it is invisible" is established through direct perception or through inference? Regarding this, if it is thought that it is established through direct perception, then it is uncertain for pretas and flesh-eaters, etc., because ghosts and spirits do not not exist, because it is possible to see the abandoned offerings. If you do not see those, what need is there to mention seeing the beings of the intermediate state and the realms of extremely pure divine eyes? Sages who possess extremely pure divine eyes do not not exist, because they possess extraordinary power of knowledge, like the authors of the treatises of the Lokayata. The reason is also not unestablished, because the actions mentioned in the medicine and astrology they have done are established, and poisons, meteoric iron, and knowledge mantras are also established. If it is thought that the author of the Lokayata treatises is not established as having divine eyes, then, if that is the case, with what knowledge does he ascertain this meaning that there is no afterlife? If it is said that it is by direct perception, then the non-existence of the afterlife is not to be understood by the means of direct perception, because it is the nature of non-existence, like the absence of things. If it is thought that it is established through inference, then inference also cannot establish it, because for those who only assert direct perception as a valid means of cognition, it will become the fault of contradiction of commitment. Therefore, you think there is no afterlife.
