Therefore, it is only that consciousness itself is designated as names such as desire, according to the distinctions of each state. Moreover, because it is the nature of aggregation, it is not ultimate truth, therefore there is no desire. Where would there be attachment, and there is no affliction at all. Therefore, the scriptures say: Subduing with great force, form is not of the nature of desire, not of the nature of being free from desire, not of the nature of affliction, not of the nature of purification, and so on, these are all closely established. The Commentary on the Heart of the Middle Way, The Blazing Logic, Volume Six. Here it is said: Desire is only existent, because it is to show its abandonment. Thus, the Blessed One said: The exhaustion of craving born together with joyful desire, and whatever is free from desire and cessation, that is Nirvana. Answer: As stated, because there is no desire, therefore abandoning it is Nirvana. Because that reasoning is not reasonable, Nirvana in the ultimate sense is not the nature of existence and non-existence. Called Nirvana, because it cannot endure examination in the ultimate sense, so that itself is incompatible. How is it? To this, the Vaibhashikas consider Nirvana to be substantially existent, and to be of the nature of permanence and permanent entities. The Sutrantikas and the Crimson Robe Sect consider it to be merely the absence of aggregates, just as a lamp goes out. Its mind is completely liberated. Thus they say. The Sthavira Nikaya consider it to be the nature of both existent and non-existent, because Nirvana has no speech, faculties, and intelligence, so it is non-existent, and because it possesses constant and unsurpassed bliss, so it is existent. Because its existent and non-existent are refuted, it will also become a refutation of the nature of both, therefore the nature of existent and non-existent must be refuted. If Nirvana is existent, because it is existent, therefore it is conditioned.

It is a synonym for the word "earth." Therefore, by inferring Nirvana as a real entity, since conditioned phenomena themselves exclude unconditioned phenomena, the very nature of the subject of dharma (referring to Nirvana) vanishes. Furthermore, if it is believed that Nirvana is the antidote to conditioned phenomena, then, if it is a conditioned phenomenon, it is not an antidote, because it is a conditioned phenomenon. For example, it would become like the cessation of conditioned phenomena. If it becomes unreal, it will depend on others and change. Because there is no real entity, it is like destruction. That is not considered an antidote, because it depends on others, just like destruction. Here, the terms unreal and non-substantial existence are synonymous. If Nirvana itself is unreal, then it is not reasonable to be associated with happiness, etc. Like a flower in the sky, its very nature vanishes. It will also become dependent on others, because there is no real entity, just like destruction. For example, when a lamp, oil, and wick, etc., are gathered together, the world calls it a lamp, and later it becomes unreal, just like depending on other things, Nirvana is also from the exhaustion of craving in the continuum of aggregates and without taking anything, and being called unreal, it will also become dependent on real entities, just like a lamp being extinguished. If you acknowledge that Nirvana is imperishable and permanent, but it is like depending on others and destruction, then it is also unreasonable to be the antidote to samsara. Moreover, the sutra says, "Monks, Nirvana is unborn, unoriginated, and unconditioned," then is it not Nirvana of the nature of unconditioned? The answer is: That cannot be an unconditioned phenomenon, because the reasons for refutation have already been explained above. That is to say, if it is a substantial existence, because it is a real entity, and because it is a conditioned phenomenon, it will become a conditioned phenomenon, not an unconditioned phenomenon, because the faults have already been explained above. If you think that Nirvana is a substantial existence, that it can be given a name, that it is unborn, and that it is eternally abiding, then what is the difference from the liberated mind conceived by the Samkhya school? That is to say, the Samkhya school also believes that it possesses awareness, is unborn and indestructible, and is the action and
