Oh! Here, the earth itself should not represent the characteristics of the earth in that way. If it is the same, then apart from the earth itself, there is nothing that can represent its hardness. Similarly, "The characteristics of a cow, the cow itself, do not require humps and dewlaps, etc., because they are to be examined with a special mind, like the characteristics of a donkey." This negates the difference. The characteristics of a cow, the cow itself, do not want to be represented as humps and dewlaps, etc., because they are to be examined with a special mind, like the characteristics of a donkey. The function of the cow itself is the essence of the cow, which is devoid of horses and other dissimilar kinds of things. The so-called "cow itself" does not want to be represented as the commonality of the cow's substance, such as humps, dewlaps, tails, hooves, and horns, etc., because if the so-called "cow itself" and the substance of the cow are different, then they are to be examined with a special mind. For example, the cow itself cannot represent the characteristics of a donkey. To this, some of our own party say, "The characteristic is not different from the basis, because it is to be represented, for example, the great man and the characteristics of the great man are not different." To refute them, it is said, "If it is one, how can there be a characteristic? Because it cannot represent itself." This means that if the basis and the characteristic are the same, then there is no need to establish the names of what is the basis and what is the characteristic. Or, if it can be established with only one basis or only one characteristic, then repeating the two becomes the fault of repetition. The Vaibhashikas consider the basis and the characteristic to be different, because "it is a characteristic because it can represent." To refute them, it should be said, "If it is other, how can there be a characteristic? Because it cannot represent the other." This means that if the basis and the characteristic are different, and if the other can represent the other, then dewlaps, etc., can also represent a horse, and the characteristic can be seen even when the basis has not arisen or has perished, therefore, the basis and the characteristic are not one.

Nor are they different. Furthermore, if asked whether it is with characteristics or without characteristics, if it is with characteristics, then it will have other characteristics, and again it will have other and other characteristics, so there will be the fault of being endless. If it is without characteristics, then it will be completely without characteristics, because there are no flowers in the sky and so on. Therefore, it is established that it is not with characteristics. For this, here is the source: Sharadvatiputra, all dharmas are without characteristics. Whatever dharma is the characteristic of whatever, it is not its characteristic, and because the characteristic is manifestly established, no dharma is truly existent. And so on. Similarly, the world is the characteristic of space, and space has no characteristic. And so on, as it is said. // Commentary on the Essence of the Middle Way, The Blazing of Reasoning, Volume Five. Here it is said: The aggregates, elements, and sense bases are truly with characteristics, because in their realm no special verbal activity arises, just as there is no going for the son of a barren woman. For Devadatta, there is special verbal activity such as going in his realm, therefore all things are truly with characteristics. Here it is explained: If, without investigation, one assumes that there is talk of going and so on in the world due to fame, then this is proving what is already proven. However, if yogis, through the wisdom of meditative equipoise, analyze the nature of things as they are, and if they assume that going and so on exists in the ultimate sense, then the meaning of the reason is not established. Thus, in the ultimate sense, it is not appropriate for there to be special reasoning talk in its realm. If asked how, if going exists in the ultimate sense, then it would exist in the gone, not-gone, or the path being gone. To this, in order to refute the Vaibhashikas and Vaisheshikas who assume that going exists in the not-gone, it is said: In the not-gone, in the ultimate sense, going should not exist, because it is a path and there is no going, like the future path.
