Just as a maidservant cannot be the nature of a pot. Destruction is also not the nature of conditioned phenomena, because it is the cause of destruction, for example, a hammer destroying a pot, the hammer is not the nature of the pot. If arising and so on are not conditioned phenomena, then how can they become the nature of conditioned phenomena? Just like space, we have not seen it as the nature of any conditioned phenomenon. Furthermore, is the aggregation of arising and so on the nature of conditioned phenomena? For example, the Sutra School says: The continuum produced by the power of separately determined causes and conditions, at the same time, is not produced from non-arising, this is arising; the abiding of the continuum of the previous moment is abiding; being different from the previous moment, aging and separation is destruction. Is it like what they say? Or, are arising and so on each the nature of conditioned phenomena? For example, the Vaibhashika School says: Arising from what was previously unarisen is arising; the abiding of what has arisen is abiding; changing from abiding to other, aging, decaying and ceasing is destruction. Is it like what they say? Regarding this, first of all, it is impossible for aggregated things to have arising and so on simultaneously, because they arise sequentially, their natures are different, and they are incompatible, so they are also impossible separately. Why? Because when things have not arisen, there is no abiding and destruction, so there is no nature of conditioned phenomena. When things are abiding, there is no arising and destruction, so there is no nature of conditioned phenomena. When things are destroyed, there is no arising and abiding, so there is no nature of conditioned phenomena. There is no arising in arising, no abiding in abiding, and no destruction in destruction. Because they have no nature of conditioned phenomena, arising and so on each cannot be the nature of conditioned phenomena. Therefore, putting these in mind and explaining: Arising and so on, by the conditioned phenomena themselves, nature and subject are not reasonable. Because it is a conditioned phenomenon, it is knowable.

Therefore, it is just like that other than that. This means that those such as birth are the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, so the aggregates and so on should not be the characteristics of the subject to be proven, because they are conditioned and because they are to be understood. It is thought that the characteristics such as birth are just like the subject to be proven other than that. Therefore, like stars, dimness, lamps, illusions, dewdrops, bubbles, dreams, lightning, and clouds, conditioned phenomena should be viewed in this way. It is established that these are said. Some say that things are only existent in essence, because they have characteristics. Those that are non-existent, such as the son of a barren woman, do not have characteristics. These statements are also not established. Because things have characteristics, we do not accept existence in essence. It is said that existence in essence is synonymous with having essence. Therefore, the reason is not established, and it also becomes contradictory. This means that because it has been shown before that things are devoid of essence, therefore, the reason of the opponents, "because it has characteristics," is not established for the Madhyamikas, because all phenomena are devoid of characteristics. That reason also becomes contradictory, because when establishing things such as earth that are devoid of essence, it is seen that they have characteristics. Therefore, the meaning of the reason is contradictory. How is it without characteristics? It is explained like this: the characteristic of earth cannot be represented as hardness by earth itself, because it is the cause of the consciousness of the body, just as it cannot be represented by fire itself. This means that it is to prevent oneness. The characteristic of earth cannot be represented as hardness by earth itself, because it is the cause of the consciousness of the body, just as the characteristic of fire cannot be represented as hardness by fire itself. The meaning of "by earth itself" is by a characteristic that has become like this. For example, how do you see a student from a ball, or a Khenpo from a student? Just as holding a ball represents being a student, or leading a student represents being a Khenpo.
