Because I can apprehend things far and near without obstruction. The nose, tongue, and body are not like that, because they only apprehend things that are in contact with their objects, in order to dispel the assertions of those who say so. One does not want to apprehend various kinds of contact with objects, in order to apprehend external phenomena directly, and in order not to apprehend the past and the future, like the eye sense. Thus it is said, the nose, tongue, and body senses do not want to apprehend contact with objects, in order to apprehend external phenomena directly, and in order not to apprehend the past and the future, like the eye sense. Just as the nose, tongue, and body senses apprehend external phenomena that are manifest, and do not apprehend the past and the future, so too is the eye sense, like the eye sense, they also do not apprehend contact with objects. In order to dispel the fault of uncertainty in the body sense and so on, in order to prevent it from being the same as establishment, it is said, "The body and so on are not uncertain." Likewise, the three characteristics of the eye, ear, and mind, do not apprehend what is not in contact with objects, because they are senses, and because they are the cause of the arising of mind, like the nose and so on. How is seeing explained in detail? Hearing, smelling, tasting, and the accumulation of body senses, should be definitely understood. Thus it is said, just as seeing and the wisdom of seeing and the sound of seeing, should not exist in the eye and the seer and the mind, so too hearing and so on, and their wisdom and their sound, should not exist in their senses and the self and the mind, it should be understood that the prevention is the same. Sound, smell, taste, and touch, the way of prevention is also the same, the wise should know appropriately with impartial wisdom. Thus it is said, just as form should not be the object of the eye and the seer and the mind, and the wisdom and sound of form should not exist in them, so too sound and so on should not be the object of the senses of the ear and so on and the self and the mind, and the wisdom and sound of sound and so on should not exist in them, the prevention is the same, the wise with
